Texting while driving

Every where I go I see billboards, commercials on TV, ect. Some people in general should not drive cars period. Others can't seem to drive and do any other task. This is all blown out of proportion.

By all means though if you can not do more than one thing at a time then don't text and drive. All these new laws are BS.

I agree 110% :thumb:

Bubba68CS 02-01-2011 09:35 AM

No...you cannot text and drive at the same time...it is physically impossible to look at your screen and watch the road at the same time. I don't care how talented you think you are...fact is you aren't.

These laws are long overdue for the very reason you think its OK to take part in this. When people fail to use common sense, the law must step in. People are so damn complacent while driving, its sickening. If you can't put the phone down for the time it takes you to get where you need to go, you need to take a cab or a bus or a train. Get the hell off the road and let those of us who do pay attention drive in peace.

JDsDream 02-01-2011 09:38 AM

Unfortunately laws can't prevent stupidity.

InvertChaos 02-01-2011 09:38 AM

Agreed ^ you look down for one second and WHAM head on collision because you drifted over

BANGER 02-01-2011 11:33 AM

Last week we had a kid (17) hit a truck head on (he was texting) and died. I really feel sorry for the truck driver he was unhurt but will miss some work anyway .

GoldenSahara00 02-01-2011 11:42 AM

alot of people can text without lookin at their phone. It can be done. the problem is you cant read messages without looking obviously. I will only text while at a red light or stop sign on a back road somewhere. unless there is an emergency, thats the only time I will.

this is one of those things where people will never agree.

OregonTJ 02-01-2011 11:44 AM

dont do it......

Please tell me that your not trying to defend people who text and drive. Basically it comes down to most people cannot do anything while driving because their mind is elsewhere. Yeah, you might be able to text with one hand while still having your eyes on the road, but you are certainly thinking about what you are texting to that person. Personally, people, if your going to drive, just drive and put all your attention on the road.

I totally agree. Most people can't talk on the phone and pay attention to their driving, much less do anything more complicated.

JD you said it. You can't fix stupid. I feel bad for the families but most of the time it's younger inexperienced drivers to begin with. I drive a big rig from time to time and you have to learn to multi task. It is safer not to text but I have to like 10 things at once while driving a truck. Just be safe.

This country does not need any new laws of any kind. We have to many. We almost have to ask permission to take a crap as it is now. next we will be fined if the don't like the smell or color.

DUI, speeding, ect. are almost all about money. 15% safety. 85% money for small towns. DUI's are a problem but a law will not stop anyone from driving drunk. I have buddies do it all the time and it doesn't stop them.

Laws do nothing to stop people from breaking the law. It only has consequences for when then do. I don't have an answer to the problem but I do know a new law wont help.

Complete and total BS. In no way can you compare impaired driving to that crap. In no way can you compare laws regarding the safety of people from other people's stupidity to that crap.

So there shouldn't be laws at all. After all they don't stop people from breaking them, they only provide consequences when they do.

if it's an emergency, you probably shouldn't be texting.

that is probably the largest crock of "you know what" i have ever read. laws won't stop people from breaking them? really? laws might not stop every jackass, but it certainly deters most people from doing things. what your "logic" dictates is that if murder weren't illegal the murder rate would stay the same?

I don't have the time of day for people who use their cell phone whilst driving.

Ever been stuck behind someone who cannot maintain a constant speed, drifts across the road, brakes late, brake unnecessarily etc? Chances are, if you take a closer look, their operating their cell phone.

It only takes a split second for a child to run into the road. Above 30mph your likely to kill them.

Exactly people who drink and drive think the law is stoopid til someone gets hurt, same way with texting everythings fun and living life until someones hurt. Stoopid Laws.

superduty_5.9 02-01-2011 02:42 PM

Yes we need basic laws to be civilized. What we don't need are unnecessary laws that should be taken care of with common sense.

Common sense if you are drunk don't drive. If you can't drive and do anything else. either don't do anything else or don't drive.

In a truck you must drive, use your GPS, listen to music, watch other drivers, eat, drink (water), talk on the phone, text and whatever else it take to get your load to it's destination on time.

ajorosa 02-01-2011 02:49 PM

Anyone watch Extreme home make over last Sunday? It was about a teenage girl who died while texting. Her family is committed to educating and having high school teens in every state sign an agreement to not text and drive. It's considered an epidemic.

530ktm 02-01-2011 02:51 PM

Where I live we have so many morons who can not drive a car safely even without a stupid cell phone stuck to their ear. I constantly get behind some jerk at a red light who sits there texting and then finally realizes the light is green and he needs to go only to have the light turn red and he is the only one who goes through. These inconsiderate stupid people will never learn to put the thing down and drive the damn car. And as far as the law goes, it is a great idea to have these laws but I don't think anyone ever gets stopped for doing these things. The cops are too busy texting.

skeeter 02-01-2011 02:51 PM

Truck drivers must be amazingly talented drivers...

Mr. Sinister 02-01-2011 02:55 PM

They make these laws because people have lost almost all common sense. The REAL shame is that we need laws like this put in place to protect the rest of us from the morons reading the newspaper, putting on makeup or texting while driving. What in your life is so important that you completely lose all respect and courtesy for everyone around you?
When we can teach people common sense, we hopefully won't need laws like this. Having been the victim of an accident with a teenage girl yakking on her cellphone, I can tell you first hand we are a long way from that common sense goal.

Murder seems to be a common sense thing. People still kill other people. So then there shouldn't be a law about murdering because it's "common sense." Your logic is clearly flawed to everyone but yourself.

Those are two very conflicting posts.

If common sense prevailed, people wouldn't do these things. They do these things, so clearly common sense does not prevail. You acknowledge common sense does not prevail (and even that you do this crap), but maintain there should be absolutely no laws regarding this - and therefore no punishment for those who do not use common sense.

Laws are necessary...driving is a privilege...not a right. If you can't do it safely, you SHOULD be punished. YOU have absolutely no right to endanger MY life because of your selfishness. Your conversation can wait...or you can pull your ass off the road if its that important.

Unbelievable that people actually defend this crap :nonono:

Pmedg 02-01-2011 03:10 PM

I can see an argument for both sides. The problem is that some people just can't drive. The test you have to take to pass your driving test (at least in MA) is a joke. My test took all of 5 minutes. We drove down the street, through a set of lights, turned around in a parking lot and back to the RMV. I could have done that when I was 11. The person that crashes while on their cell phone is likely to be the one who gets just as distracted by their radio, or another person in the car and causes an accident. The cell phone is not the root of the issue; people’s inability to drive is the problem.

also i am not advocating drivers licenses be given to 11 year olds

RedJK 02-01-2011 03:27 PM

If you can dodge a wrench, you can text and drive.

XJ Knight 02-01-2011 03:39 PM

This is how I go into texting and driving cause I do it.. Burn me if you want, but it works for me.. For the most part I will only text at stop lights if need be.. If I must finish a text after the light goes green. I have learned my key pad well enough to not have to look at my phone thus my eyes never leave the road or look at the phone.. I only read texts at stop lights.. If I'm on the highway and it's open going.. AKA no other cars around me.. I will read responses..

Flame me if you please but it works for me and the safety of those around me without having to park the phone while driving

talking on the cell and driving is about as easy as it gets.. Had to do it for my last full time job.. Never have to take your eyes off the road while talking on the phone and loose no attention to whats around you.. Maybe with the exception of wondering if the cop behind talking on his phone will nail you for talking on yours.. Probably the most distracting thing for talking on a cell and driving.. Not wanting to get a ticket.. Or at least that's what it is for me..
