2011 Sahara Unlimited Questions

Newby here, but always loved Jeeps, finally about to pull the trigger on one. A few questions:

Will a 33" tire fit on a Sahara without a lift?
Will a 33" spare tire fit as a spare without any modifications to rear?
What is the advantage/disadvantage to putting 17" custom wheels with 33" tires, doesn't seem like many put 18" wheels with 33" (and the Rubi stocks 17" and the Sahara stocks 18")
Does the painted top cause a lot of problems with scratches compared to the traditional black?

Thanks...Ted

welcome to the forum.
I've got stock 18" Sahara tires & they are workding fine for my use....Bridgestone Dueler A/T 255R70x18 IIRC, but will check for sure.

Just found this tire size calculator that may be helpful Tire size calculator

Mine is an 08 that predates the painted top. Personally I don't like the painted version, nor do I care for the matching fenders....but that came with the package....

good luck

what mods to you have to make to attach a 33'' tire on the back?

JIMBOX 02-04-2011 09:52 AM

 you're not the OP, but

It depends on the mod jeep/bumpers/size/weight/backspace-etc

Thanks for the info, guess to clarify, can the spare fit without mods, if so what needs to be done.

(Yes it will fit but with stock wheels you will need a wheel spacer as not to rub in turns)

Will a 33" spare tire fit as a spare without any modifications to rear?

(No for the same reason a stock wheel will rub with 33's. The backspace is too deep on stock wheels and the wider tire will make it pull away from the mount. If you had a new wheel with better backspacing it would fix both problems. Guess you could put a wheel spacer on spare carrier too to solve the problem)

What is the advantage/disadvantage to putting 17" custom wheels with 33" tires, doesn't seem like many put 18" wheels with 33" (and the Rubi stocks 17" and the Sahara stocks 18")

(Main reason is price. 17' tires are cheaper then 18 tires and like already mentioned, to put a true 33 on your jeep you will need new wheels anyways unless you run with wheel spacers.)

Does the painted top cause a lot of problems with scratches compared to the traditional black?

(No clue on this one but know the traditional ones are easily scratched.)

Thanks...Ted

Basically to go to 33's you need better backspace to fit stock Jeep. To get better backspacing you will need either wheel adapters(spacer) or new wheels. Stock wheel at least with 17's are 6 1/4" backspace. You need at least a 5" to 4.5" backspace for a true 33X12.5 tire to fit.

You can put a 285/70 which is just shy of 33 and 1.4" more narrow on the stock wheel and spare without no issues except very slight rub at full turn.
