so pretty much i bought the jeep off a guy last friday who was supposed to bring me the title by wendesday, that rolled around and still nothing just said the title isnt in he filed for a lost title. now i know that its my fault for not having gotten the title at first but i was excited so i made him fill out a bill of sale stating that he would get the title to me then take his plate off it then, also said on the bill of sale i had ten days to have it checked out and if he was dishonest with the details of the jeep mechanical wise i could in return get my money back. he told me it was in perfect shape, heat ran a little there was snow on the ground so couldnt really look underneath to well also know this is my fault, so now for the reason for the post,,,
i have found rust on my frame were the driverside rear leaf spring attaches to the back side of the frame, not the hole frame is rusted but its a pretty big spot right were the leaf bolts through, is there anything i can do to fix this or should i just get my money back anyways..? sorry if i sound stupid, was an excited soldier that just got a bonus now i got a rusted frame jeep... and no title.

i had planned on adding a lift kit either 3in leafs or 4, but not sure if it would be worth it considering the frame, is there a way to fix the frame, have it cut and welded or something? new to this so not sure what to do at all

Not sure about Indiana......but Illinois is a real B!]CH to get titles from if you do not have the original and are not the person on that original. Unless you got one HELL of a deal..... I think I would back out of this one (if the guy WILL) and count myself lucky.
Oh yeah.....rust on a frame in Indiana... I would be surprised if it DID NOT have any....

get your money back and tell him to call ya when he gets the title in his hand.
don't mention the rust to him .
now with your money back and knowing a little more to look for take your time and find exactly what you want.
yes the frame can be fixed if you decide to go back and buy it.
the 89 like my 87 had a few issue's that were fixed on latter years.
find one with a 6 cylinder or a swapped in v-6 v-8 and you will be happier in the long run.

well i tried calling him about the money, he said he spent it already so now i guess im stuck with it, he is bringing the title tomorrow. so now just to fix the rust, im trying to upload pics of it now.

In Ky. it takes less then 5 days to have a Duplicate title in hand. That is some nasty rust!
02-06-2011 11:50 AM
wow that rust is horrible im supprised that is still holding when u drive. At quadratec they sell replacement chassie pieces. u cut that piece off and u weld a new one on
02-06-2011 11:53 AM
ya i wasnt to happy when i found it, but thats the only spot on the frame were there is rust, would it cost alot to have it welded on im not sure how to weld.
02-06-2011 11:56 AM
nope. if u get the part it would prob be like 100 to have it welded, by like a private welder. any mechanic will charge u like 300-500
02-06-2011 12:02 PM
Do you mind sharing how much you paid for it?
02-06-2011 12:03 PM
i looked on the site not sure exactly what im looking for could you copy and paste the link? if you can find it, i found Jeep Frames & Accessories - Quadratec just not sure if which i need
Call around to any 4x4 shops and ask about welding. The pro to garage welds, they are cheap. Pros to shop weld, you may get a small warranty

You made the deal without checking for rust? Well that is your fault. You cannot expect your money back from the seller for your mistake. If that is the only rust, count yourself lucky and have it fixed.
As for the title, that is a differant subject. I would tell him that since you cannot drive the vehicle without the title, that you need to be able to drive right away and need your money back so you can buy something else. That is your only angle. Did you write a deadline on the bill of sale? If you have the Wednesday agreement on the bill of sale you can back out. Of course the fact is that he has your money and it is more or less in his hands.
I know in Florida a title turn around is like 2-3 weeks unless you go to a title office that can produce a title right there. We have 2 in our area. I had to do this on my Jeep when I sold it. We also have "virtual titles", so they do not send you a paper copy. That was my issue. I had to pay to get a hard copy.
DO NOT DO ANY WORK TO THAT THING TIL YOU HAVE A TITLE!!! It is worthless without it. I would also take a ride down to your local title office and see if that VIN is clear. I bought a car once under similar circumstances and it turned out that the guy had a lein on the title and needless to say, I never got the title and had to part out the car.

Draco, only gave 3000 for it
02-06-2011 12:11 PM
mechanic will give u a warranty but a private welder that only does fabrication will do a much better job and u wont need a warranty.
For the way that replacement is designed u might be able to cut off part of it and then bolt it on to the rest of it but welding it would be a better idea
02-06-2011 12:13 PM
thanks for the help guys, i know it was my fault i got excited and looked past it with all the snow on it. 89jeepyj thanks for the link.
02-06-2011 12:17 PM
yup. my 89yj didnt have a drop of rust on it and i payed 1200. but in long term everything broke on it
02-06-2011 12:18 PM
In my opinion for what you got that's a little much, so if getting your money back is a option then I would go with what Scott howard said.......wait for exactly what you need.
For that money you can do much better. Just my two cents
02-06-2011 12:21 PM
well with that one rust spot as long as the rest of the truck is good and it has a 6 u can prob keep it. it all depends on what u are planning to do with it. rebuild it for offroader/street. or if u were just planning on leaving it stock
02-06-2011 12:22 PM
its just a project for now, Im in the army and deploying next year so then ill buy a brand new jeep, just not sure what to get yet, gotta have 35s and a lift looking to spend alot of money it, so i dont have to worry about stuff like the rust. any suggestions
02-06-2011 12:23 PM
x2 If you want to try to rescue the jeep go for it. I would definitly go over it alot more and make sure there isn't anymore.
02-06-2011 12:25 PM
89jeepyj, its just a daily driver until i leave, id like to put a small lift on it, has 2in body already just needs new leaf springs or a lift id like a 4in on it but idk how to put it all on and dont like paying other people to do the work for me.
02-06-2011 12:28 PM
ya when i first baught my jeep i paid someone and it was 1000 and they did a bad job and it took them like a week. If you do it yourself it will take you a few hours. just make sure you buy all new bushings and those types of things so you make sure everythings new. you dont want to have to replace the bushings down the road
02-06-2011 12:30 PM
ya i was looking at kits, do i need to get one that comes with the drop down stuff for the transfer case, and stuff. how far can i lift without needing to replace all that.
02-06-2011 12:33 PM
nope all u should do is buy 4 leaf springs alone and then buy the bushings seperate. You will save A LOT of money. i spend 50 a leaf on my 4.5 springs :). you wont need extented brake lines or anything, so you wont need a kit for 2 inchs of lift
02-06-2011 12:40 PM
cool ill look into that, gotta get the frame fixed before i jump into that im sure ill post something about it.
