rear springs
here's what i have. i took the pass. side rear leaf spring off of the 90 yj i have for parts and put it on the drivers side of my 89, now the drivers side sits back an inch farther than the pass. side. what would cause this? thanks Kim:confused:

The leaf spring is on backwards maybe? Measure from the center pin to either side of the leaf.

you can't put them on backwards due to the front shackle bolt is bigger.?

RednekYJ 02-08-2011 06:23 PM

Take some pictures......Really different size?....I guess I never noticed that.

One probably has settled more than the other...swap the other spring off the donor.

i guess i don't under stand what sag would have to do with the centering of the springs?

Bigowe 02-08-2011 07:58 PM

Are the springs side specific when you buy new ones? thanks

89JEEPYJ 02-08-2011 08:00 PM

when u buy new springs one hole is bigger then the other, and the rear hole is bigger which goes on the opposite side of the shackle

Bigowe 02-08-2011 08:06 PM

doesn't the bigger hole go to the front? at least thats what mine do.

89JEEPYJ 02-08-2011 08:48 PM

i dont think it matters as long as both of them are facing the same direction. but most likely big hole goes in the back. I could be remembering it wrong since i did them a while back. but the leaf springs had built in shims so it could only go one way

RednekYJ 02-08-2011 09:39 PM

Okay. So it is most likely not on backwards. After checking out my rig this is how it is. 21 mm for frame spring mounts, 19 mm for shackle end.

Is the arc on the springs the same? How about shackle angles, do they look the same on both sides? Are the leafs staggered the same on each pack? Do both packs have the same amount of leafs?

Bigowe 02-08-2011 10:04 PM

the one on the drivers side is pretty much straight up and down, the one on the pass. side is angled a little bit towards the front.

Swap out the other spring.:thumb:

Settling/sag actually will change the length of the spring.......not much just enough to give you the headache you have......

Check your leaf count too........
