35" tires on dana 35s a bad idea?

I have a 05 sport with what I believe are dana 35 rear and dana 30 front axles. I love the look of 35" inch tires. Should I reconsider maybe getting 33s or would 35s be ok on my axles. Also this will not be my primary vehicle. Thanks

From what I've read and heard is that you should be ok if you're not real rough with your jeep -like if you're going to drive mainly on paved surfaces and light off roading. I'm looking at lifting and adding 35s but going to upgrade axles later. A good friend of mine has a wrangler with 3.5 RE superflex on 35s and stock axles and never broke any axles. I think he's been pretty lucky because he's done alot of hard off roading.

If it's your main driver I would not go to 35's at all. You did not talk about lift so you'll need to go there to even run 33 s. Also need to consider gear ratio and power to turn the tires.

I ran 35's on stock D35 for 6 months regeared to 4.88's and put a Detroit locker only lasted for 2 months till i broke both axle shafts. IMHO I would upgrade your axles first. I drive hard and have a heavy foot so thats why mine did not last.

Yep, 35" tires are just too heavy and have too much mass for a stock Dana 35c axle. You'd end up with a busted axle shaft before too long if you installed 35" tires. There are, however, stronger upgraded alloy axle shafts you can install to make 35" tires a reasonable tire size though, they are made by Superior Axle. One such kit is called the Super 35, the other is their C-clip Eliminator KIt. A good least expensive source of them is Savvy Offroad or email them at info@savvyoffroad.com

Had 35s on my stock dana 30/35 for about 8 months and wheeled it pretty hard and had no problems. Maybe its a ticking time bomb maybe it will be fine, who knows. If it breaks ill fix it with something better if not ill get to upgrading at some point.

You nailed it right there. :)

I would upgrade the rear axle before that for sure. And you really REALLY should regear to the proper gearing. Your jeep will loose a race to a lady bug with stock gearing and 35's

or carry spare axleshafts with you... I happen to have a D35 out of my 99 TJ sitting in a crate full of other stuff just LOOKING for a home :)
