Ok. I'm about this close -> <- to leaving my jeep in the shop and with the expectation that when i return my front drive shaft will be sitting in the back. I rented a stall, got the jeep over my head at a good working position, then fought with the bolts for an hour!!!! Got absolutely nowhere! All i did was come close to rounding out the bolt heads. I decided it was time to stop before i was successful at doing just that. I may make one more attempt before I give up. I did get the opportunity to lube up the CV joint to see if that made any difference with the angry sparrows. I think it did. Either that or the warm garage (doesn't squeak when warm). I guess Iíll find out in the morning when i drive to work. Does anyone have any tips to get some leverage on the bolts by the transfer case?

I had a problem with one bolt on mine that I ended up making round. I used a dremel tool to take off the head of the bolt and using vise grips on the remaining bolt once the drive shaft was out.

You are using an 8mm box-end wrench on them I hope. I do half of the bolts at a time with the transfer case locked into 4Hi so the driveshaft can't turn. That allows me to pull on the wrench hard enough to break the bolts free. Then after one side is done, I place the t-case into 2Hi or Neutral and rotate the driveshaft 180 so I can get to the remaining bolts, then lock the t-case back into 4Hi again to lock the driveshaft in place again.

I have what appears to be a skid plate underneath my transfer case/transmission, etc. It is what is crowding my space. Do y'all remove the driveshaft with this still in place? (I wouldn't see how you could get a dremel in there to cut off a bolt head) I'd consider removing it to have some more working room, but it seems to be an important part of holding things up...

It was tight but I was still able to get in there with the dremel tool with the skidplate on. It was pretty quick and easy.

An 8mm is the exact size, the 5/16" is probably why the bolt heads were rounding off. :)

Wouldn't the 5/16 be slightly smaller and less sloppy? I know mathematically 5/16 is a tad bit smaller, but I have somewhat limited experience with tools. I mostly just change my oil!

I used a 12point 5/16 box end wrench to get mine out. Its just a pain with the t-case skid on

Success! Finally got the sucker out. Most bolts came out easy, it was just two of them near the transfer case that gave me trouble. They were rounded out a bit. The 8 mm box end was just too loose, so was the 5/16. After fighting with it for a while I was able to get my hands on a ľ inch drive set. The 8mm hex socket did the trick. Anything 12 pt would just go right around it. The hex was a must. Thanks for all the advice everyone. Now it’s time to start rebuilding the CV.

for some reason its posted every where its 8mm but the 8mm did nothing but remove skin and add ba bruise to the back of my hand doing the transfercase end when the 8mm slipped being it didn't fit as tight as the smaller 5/16 which worked like a charm . Try 5/16 first !

Most of the Jeep's non-engine/t-case hardware changed from SAE to metric so it's possible it used to be 5/16" but it definitely eventually became 8mm.
