Ticking

How many jeeps are out there that tick? My 05 6 cylinder has had a slight tick since I got it sounds like an exhaust leak I can't figure it out. I just wanted to see if this truly is just a jeep thing.

My 2001 TJ Sport has a light ticking. It had it before replacing the exhaust, and it still has it. I assume that it is lifters. She carries about 30Lbs of oil pressure at idle, and 45-50 on the road, so I am not worrying about it, I'll just turn the stereo up a little.

There are a lot of guys on here with more knowledge than I have. Youi might want to hear what they say.

my 2000 tj 6cyl ticks at idle, everyone I know with a 4.0 has a ticking problem

kjeeper10 02-17-2011 03:39 PM

Ticks till warm 160,000 miles.. mobile 1 high mileage and some MMO, helped a bunch. It used to sound like a f*****g diesel engine before I changed to this combo.

My 98 ticks and it has been for years. I've been told its the fuel injectors that's doin it

MLaborde 02-17-2011 03:51 PM

Mine ticks, I guess. It sounds more like a fast puff puff puff, kind of like a hole in the muffler. It doesn't do it when i rev the engine at idle, just when driving.

Is this what you hear?

It stays the same all the time so no worrys here

kjeeper10 02-17-2011 04:00 PM

Talking about the load lifter tick that 95% of all jeeps have. The 4.0 is a very noisy engine that will last forever : )

It keeps me awake

uf20wop 02-17-2011 04:19 PM

i have it too... very slight, at first i was concerned but i'm pretty sure it's just normal valvetrain/injector noise

not worried about it anymore

Mine does the same ticking untill it warms up. I thought I had an exhaust leak but come to find out it was a hole in my muffler that was making all that noise. Replaced the muffler with a banks monster and now I couldnt hear the sound over the new exhaust even it it was still ticking!

jeepr 02-18-2011 12:55 AM

I had a tick, but it went away after I tightened my manifold.....

havoc64 02-18-2011 01:59 PM

I got a fix for the ticking, take the doors off, the top off and crank the stereo up to 11...

chutta 02-19-2011 08:06 AM

There is some discussion on Jeepforum.com that this is due to low zinc oils mandated by the EPA. The 4.0 is of an older flat tappet(lifter) design that should have the old type of oil. The additive is called ZDDP and still can be found in Valvoline VR1 racing oil and some others.
It came up in discussion in relation to the OPDA failures of 05/6 wranglers.

Effisimo 02-19-2011 07:48 PM

My 05 wrangler ticks until it is warm. When I accelerate the ticks speed up as well. Its been doing it for 40k miles now.

jp2611 02-19-2011 07:55 PM

Mine used to tick-a retired mechanic thought dirty oil/lifter/crankcase. Flushed the crankcase-switched to full synthetic and Lucas oil stabilizer. Also switched to Wix filter, that was about 8-9 thousand miles ago-and 2 oil changes-no more tick-course winter time maybe why can't hear it but don't think so-used to hear it in the garage.

lockdjp 02-22-2012 09:14 AM

Mine ticks but i think it's an exhaust leak, i will find out this weekend. only 90,000 miles on my 4.0

Panther57 02-22-2012 07:33 PM

I have the ticking in my '04 X ... once temp gauge hits 1/4 mark it stops. A mechanic friend says its the metal gasket near the exhaust manifold -- once the gasket warms up and expands, the ticking noise stops. I've learned to ignore it ... AND I LOVE MY WRANGLER!
