Hard Top painting
What do you guys and girls paint your hard tops with? How long has it lasted? How durable is it?

Pics are always welcome!

Having the Jeep painted this spring so I got to have a nice looking hard top to go along with it :thumb:

Rustoleum satin black is a good match for factory and will last about a decade. You'll need 7 or 8 cans to do the job right. You'll also need to clean the top really well prior to painting, using a product like Marine Clean or VM&P Naphtha to ensure good adhesion. Remember to mask your windows and anything you don't want to get over spray on.
Apply in many light coats until you get satisfactory coverage. Allow 10 minutes dry time between coats.

I used Krylon Flat Gray, looks just like the original. I did make sure I washed it and primed it before hand. About due again and it has been 14 years.

So I really only need spray paint? I have Marine Clean so I can clean it. Did you guys take out the window seals or just taped them up good?

Undead-89 02-20-2011 09:32 AM

I took mine out but they never went back in properly.

Hmm that doesn't give me much confidence lol. Mine don't stay in anyways. They're old and start falling out on the top corners after about 2-4 rides.

Don't no how good it would work but I have thought bout wont come off and if it does it gets fixed free.u prob looking at 500 bucks or little less

I finally just pulled the trim off the windows. It is only for looks. and the channel looks better than the pieces flopping in the breeze.

But if you like the look and they aren't to broken up. After you paint you can hold the original stuff in with the black roof caulk for shingles and repairs. Its sticky, waterproof and made for all-weather.

$500 is too much for me after a paint job for the tub. But the roof caulk sounds like a good idea.

I just taped everything off, used krylon fusion flat black. A bit more expensive than the competition but definitely worth it, its been about a year now and no fading at all.I painted it from a white hardtop to a black.

see post #6

Thanks for the link! Sounds easy enough to just tape everything off. But doesn't the fusion only come in satin black?

i think there's gloss, satin and flat.
Just gotta find it, not every place sells it.

Its a little more I know but the price I got in the new paint I might as well finish it off.shyer would look good but up to u.u gotta draw th line somewhere.the rhino liner is bout 100 bucks and u can do it urself.linex looks smoother though

Raptor liner. Done over 3 years ago and was $380. No fade, and gave it the same texture as factory. This is only a plow jeep and it gets all the harsh weather. Probably cost more, but I work at a paint and autobody shop part time. It is dusty in these pics, as I had just pulled the YJ out of storage for the pics in the fall.[IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG]
