Best shocks for 4" lift

So my gf has a 2004 tj with a 4" lift and 33" bfg's. I haven;t lift my yj yet so i figured I would ask you guys for your opinions on shocks for her TJ... She currently has some Rough Country's though were not sure because the numbers on the side are gone. I know she doesn't want OME because she hates yellow and it wont look good on her silver and black jeep.

How do you test to see if shocks are bad? They are a little rusty on the main body. On my cars if the ride was bad it was time but on my yj and her tj they always ride like a dump truck...lol

They will feel soft. but sometimes its hard to tell. The Rough Country stuff is alright for more street use but is not made with the same strength of some others.

Most don't use RC. just b/c of the price but RC is priced low b/c of the way they do business. They don't have a good technical department and sell mostly through distributors, not really ever facing the end user.

Do yourself a favor and spend a little more.

Buy a tool because you need and will use it, not because its cheap.

OME shocks can be painted. Scuff them up with sandpaper or scotchbrite and paint them whatever color you like. Its a Wrangler not a work of art.

X2 on the Rancho 9000s. I will never drive a Jeep without an adjustable shock again. They are great. They ever have a $100 rebate right now. I got mine for just over $60 a shock shipped. my4by.com

OME Nitro Chargers is what I run and like, but there have been very positive reviews on Ranchos new RS5000x shocks that are a lot less expensive.

I've had Bilsteins, and I currently have OME Nitrochargers. No contest...I'd go with Nitrochargers again, in a heart beat. I can't speak to the Rancho shocks, but the newer versions have had good reviews.

tworley 06-27-2016 05:35 PM

Yep the ranchos are getting great reviews. I just put on a set of bilsteins and really like them.

That big of a difference? I have the 5100's on my RK lift and I cannot say a negative thing about them for daily use, even off road they are fantastic. Can the OME's be better?

Bilstein 5100's made a huge ride quality difference over the Pro Comp ES3000's I was running. They are silver with black shock boots...

They did for me. I've got some absolutely horrific roads around my house (paved roads, dirt would be better...), and the difference in the shock's ability to react to low speed, small events is miles apart. The valving in the OME shocks allows them to lessen the jarring that the Bilsteins used to put me through. Granted, the Bilsteins were miles ahead of the shocks they replaced (not sure what brand they were), but for the roads around here, the Nitrochargers win.
