95 YJ Engine Block Heater Question

I just picked up my 95 YJ SE last week and just noticed that it has a plug inside of the grill. The owners manual says that it an optional "Engine Block Heater". My question is , how is engine block heater susposed to be used? Do I plug it in overnight on cold days? Do I plug it up an hour before I start the engine? What does heating the enging block do? I apologize in advance for asking what most of you consider "rookie" questions, but I am a rookie when it comes to Jeeps as it my first.

Thanks!!

Usually you would plug it in overnight on cold nights. It keep the Oil liquidy instead of sludgy. Also will keep the Antifreeze from freezing if it gets below the rated temp.
It makes it easier to start, faster to warm up and less chance of damaging the engine from lack of lubrication.

If it's going to be below freezing then I leave mine plugged in overnight. Otherwise I just plug it in a few hours before start up. Either way the block heater will cut your warm up time in half.
