Towing A TJ
 
Anyone out there flat towing a TJ? I've got a 1998 with a manual transmission and would like to tow it behind my RV.

Any recommendations on tow bars, lights or ?

Would a trailer be better?

Wranglers were designed to be flat towed... Tow Bars mount easily, but there are way too many different brands to narrow it down. It will all be personal choice in the end. Check out www.etrailer.com for a good selection and decent pricing.

If t/c is in nuetral, will the oddometer still accumulate miles?

I've towed mine on several occasions and it is easy to pull and tracks well. I tow mine with transmission in 1st gear and tcase in neutral.

I have a '98 4.0 auto, that we flat tow behind our motorhome. To do so the tc must be in neutral...it does NOT record the mileage while being towed.

I've got a bracket that is custom fit for a TJ in case you're looking for one. It bolts to factory bolts. I'd sell it pretty cheap. It came off my '04 which I no longer tow.

Will a bracket for a 2004 fit a 1998? I'm seeing tow bars priced from $135 to $800+, is there really that much difference?

Also, is 5000 pound rating good enough? Seems to be 5000 and 6000 pounders out there.

Ok so I tow mine behind my motorhome. I have '99 TJ. I use a Roadmaster tow bar. It a square hitch slides right into the receiver. I have the roadmaster tow brackets on the Jeep they are very secure. You can see them but just barely. I have the break away and light plug up front also. Then you need a brake controler as most states require you have brakes on anything over 1000 lbs. I use an Even Break 9700. Don't forget you'll need to wire up the stop and turn signals to work off the motorhome.

Keep your eye on Craigslist they usually have them a lot. Be sure you get the proper brackets for the jeep most '99 - '06 fit.

Other then that it tows great, you do need to place the transfer case in neutral AND the transmission must be in gear (I use 3rd)to keep it from turning while towing. Make sure the key is in the unlock position so the front wheels track and turn.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER IS NEVER BACK-UP WHILE HOOKED UP. YOU CAN'T DO IT. THE FRONT WHEELS WILL SPIN ON YOU.

Sorry I meant that most 97-06 fit your jeep and since my jeep weighs in at 3300 lbs. any 5000 to 6000 hitch will work fine.

Stay away from ball mounts hitches unless you like looking at the tow bar folded up in front of you when your driving around.

Thanks BobtG, Your information is just what I am looking for. Had no idea about brakes on the towed vehicle...or about not backing up.

We take the motorhome from WA to NM and back twice a year and always overnight in Moab. Always seemed a shame to not have the Jeep.

Roadmaster removeable frame mounted tow bar brackets, and roadmaster's cheapest towbar. Works great. I just use the magnetic lights on my rear bumper.

I, too, have towed my '97 TJ behind my 40 foot motor home for MANY miles with virtually no issues. A ball mount hitch is what I have used for all those many miles and it is still working well. And, you can back for very short distances, ie; adjust front to rear for gas/diesel fill-ups. As for lighting, you can easily tap into the lighting system for the towed Jeep or get magnetic lights to mount on the bumper as mentioned previously. Also, some states may require brakes on a towed vehicle, but depending on the size(power) of the towing vehicle you should be fine without brakes on the Jeep. I really don't know it is behind there until I look in the review camera and see its "happy face" (grill and front bumper) just going where it's towed.

I tow my 97 tj behind an SUV from Houston to Durango and back every summer. I use a removeable tow bar and magnetic lights hooked into the SUV's towing system. I don't have travel brakes and it's fine. I don't even try to back up since I cant back a regular trailer for beans why try with 4x4? My biggest issue is looking in the rearview and thinking I"m being tailgated. Also the jeep has the aerodynamics of a brick so your tow vehicle will take a hit in the mileage dept depending on whay you're driving.

Good evening, I have a '98 TJ 4.0L/Auto which I plan to flat tow behind my truck. I have a few questions, first, I believe the streering wheel needs to be unlocked?? I know the transfer case needs to be in neutral, but how about the transmission.....leave it in park?? finally, can I just tap into the rear light wiring fed from my truck, or do I need to install isolation diodes?? I was thinking of making up a jumper to connect the TJ's 4 way trailer plug to the trailer plug on my truck. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance, Andy

Tows great behind an rv , again stressing don't back up and don't forget it's back there, it's hardly noticeable while driving, it's that smooth. good luck and enjoy.

Im going to make travels interesting, I will be towing my Jeep behind my truck and fifth wheel camper as soon as I get my correct towbar setup for my new bumper. Also have a wireless camera on the way.

Has anyone flat towed a TJ using a front mount receiver as a tow bar mount? I was considering buying a roadmaster setup and plugging the square hitch into the receiver on the jeep and mounting the tow bar mounts on my school bus. Is this a good route to go or just flip flop the configuration like normal?

I don't think that would be a good idea at all. The pivot point should be at the tow vehicle. I would think the Jeep would be very unstable. A disaster waiting to happen, IMO.

I've never flat towed anything before so I'm curious about options. I've seen aftermarket bumpers that pretty stout with eyes for shackles, would those same mounts be good to hook a tow bar too?

Can you flat tow a Jeep... With another Jeep? Just curious because me and my dad have them, and were talking about going out to Moab this summer. No point in spending the money driving them both out when we can split gas jn one Jeep and tow the other. I know we'd get less mpg in one, but still better than two tanks to fill on the way out there, I would think.

It'd put an awful lot of stress on the drivetrain and brakes of the front one; and you'd probably jack-knife it if you tried to brake on a corner...

I used Roadmaster's TJ tow bar mounts when I flat towed, but a friend of mine has a tow bar that he rigged up to the shackle mounts on his bumper. Seems to work fine, but I would make sure the shackle mounts, and bumper are up for the task. I would not trust some cheapo bumpers.

Not a good idea. Especially if the two Jeeps are the same model and weight.

A properly set up tow bar system would cost a lot more than the extra gas it would take to drive both Jeeps there.

We flat towed our 97 TJ over 85K miles with no problems, but after hooking up and unhooking all those times, I made some changes when we replaced the TJ after 16 years. We towed the TJ all those miles with a fixed arm tow bar. It works great and is inexpensive. The issue is hitching up. You have to be perfectly positioned, and without a spotter, it can be time consuming. Additionally, you either have to swing the tow bar up, which probably will block some of your vision, or remove it leaving you with needing a place to store it.

We went with an adjustable arm tow bar that makes hitching up quite easy, especially if you do it without a spotter. Our Blue Ox Adventa II tow bar stays on the RV all the time, and I use these D-ring shackle bracket adapters new from Blue Ox to attach to our recovery bumper.

You will need isolating diodes to use the TJs lights, or you can go with separate bulbs wired into the rear tail light housing, or magnetic lights. An outfit called CooltecLLC.com has a nice plug and play setup for your TJ lamps too.

Depending on your tow vehicle, you will likely need a supplemental brake system equipped with a break-away system. I know that my 2010 Ford E450 chassis class C RVs state in the owners manual that you need supp brakes over 1500 lbs as the force on the receiver is more than they design for, even though they rate to tow 5K or 10K depending on hitch type. Read this about supplemental brakes before someone talks you out of needing them... The Physics Of Towed Vehicles

If your RV is big and powerful, a trailer is a great choice! You can get a decent used trailer equipped with brakes for less than you will spend on a tow bar and supp brakes. The problem for RVers with a trailer is where to store it at your destination and perhaps at your home too. Most RV parks don't have storage areas for trailers so keep that in mind.

One other thing to keep in mind is the angle of the tow bar to the tow vehicle. This needs to be nearly level + or - 2 to 4 inches depending on manufacturer. Level is best by far! You may require an up/down hitch adapter on the tow vehicle. With our JKU, we needed to move the tow bar up 10" to be level with the Jeep bumper.

I don't use the shackle mounts on my ARB bumper, but I did use the bolt on Blue Ox brackets like these Blue Ox BX88230 General Purpose Adapter Kit : Amazon.com : Automotive on it, and it works very well. Here's a pic

My aftermarket bumper has the D rings lined up directly into the frame rails. Solid steel through both sides of the bumper.
