BEST Winch for 300-400 (delivered)?

please don't say, none save up for a warn or any thing like that. the fact is i live in fort Wayne, Indiana not Alaska and i need a winch every now and then, plus I'm on a budget. I had to call a tow truck and it was 75.00. so i figure if i use it more than 5 times ill get my money back.

now i have been looking at Smitty built and super winch 8500.
i like super winch b/c its assembled in America. vs the Smitty built.

what other options do you recommend.

thanks
Dan

and if you like, what mnt. ing plate do you recommend?

Rubicon2 03-01-2011 12:44 AM

Nope sorry to say that Superwinch is not assembled in America. When I got mine it had some nice paperwork that said it complies yada yada right below it, Made in China. With that said it is still a nice winch and I don't regret buying it even though made in China still haunts me. I looked and found that Superwinch winches are now Made in China. It was a good value at $319.00. I would stay away from Smittybilt anything.

dmiller369 03-01-2011 12:47 AM

what smittybuilt do you have the lp8500 or the epi9.0?

dmiller369 03-01-2011 12:48 AM

actually that was a dumb question, you said you got it for 319 so i assume its the lp8500. how many times have you used it? I hear its pretty slow, how do you feel about the speed?

Yup the Superwinch LP8500. Speed isn't really a big problem for me. As long as it gets me out. I like it better than alot of the other cheapies due to it's very low gearing. Shouldn't have to ever really worry about the motor straining too much and that also means less draw and strain on the battery. I haven't used it yet. Just installed it about 2 weeks ago.

Mortalis5509 03-01-2011 12:57 AM

I have the smitty XRC8 and it's a pretty good winch IMO. I have the synthetic line on mine.

If that's your jeep I have the same exact color and it's a Rubi....lol. Rare color and love it.

Rubicon2 03-01-2011 01:01 AM

I love the color as well. Believe it or not I bought this from a guy with only 58,000 miles, stored winters and put into 4wd twice. Never been off-road before I got it. Excellent find.

I think the warn m8000 was on sale for 439 w free shipping a while back

Maybe someone will post what website I don't remember

KillerSloth 03-01-2011 01:38 AM

StreetSideAuto.com had the Warn M8000 for $440 but that deal is long gone. It was free shipping and no tax so $440 delivered. I was lucky enough to get one though :D

Maybe wait to see if they have a sale again (it was $100 off orders over $500).

what kind of bumper is that you have? and how much did that run you? do you still need to have a mounting plate or does that have one built it.

NewYJOwner 03-01-2011 08:33 AM

Rough Country has a couple winches in that price range, for 399.95 you can get the 9500 with synthetic line and aluminum fairlead, or 299.95 the 9500 with standard cable.

Warn rock crawler bumper. The mounting plate comes separate as does the winch grille guard. The bumper was about $ 250-270, the mounting plate was about $320 or so and the grille guard was around $140 something. All of the stuff is made by Warn except for the Winch.

KawiMonsterSahara 03-01-2011 10:41 AM

XRC8 or XRC10... slow but get the job done

RubiCobra 03-01-2011 03:37 PM

+1 for the smittybuilt XRC8. It's good enough to get you out of some $hit with an occasional pull and it costs about $100 to rebuild the brushes if it burns up.

That's one thing about the cheaper winches that is somewhat stressed is that they are for an occasional pull and not constant duty like the heavy duty versions, which doesn't bother me because I bought it for that once or seven times in life where you need it. Where I wheel, you can get by fine with out it. No need to spend huge amounts of cash on something that may only get used 2 or 3 times.

Ibuildembig 03-01-2011 03:45 PM

Find a used Warn and dont look back :)

would i be able to buy a mounting plate for my stock bumper and then mount my winch and the warn grille guard?

and does anyone else know anything about these ruff country winches?

also, what are the advantages to the sinthetic line?

Yeah I believe the Warn winch plate works with a stock bumper and you have to have the Warn winch plate to mount the Warn grille guard.

TOKKIE 03-02-2011 10:40 AM

I'm in the same boat, want a winch but will not use it very much also have two kids and a mortgage so can't afford a warn. I ordered the superwinch lp8500 last night from amazon.com. I got the winch, smittybuilt mounting plate and 3x30 recovery strap for $453 shipped.

I just looked into this winch since you listed it and I'm pretty interested. Are you happy with it? Hard to believe its made in the USA for that price!

The only Milemarker winches that are made in the US are their hydraulic winches. All of Milemarker's electric winches are made in China.

To me, the best $300-400 winch would be a used Warn, Tabor, Ramsey, or Superwinch S9000 or X9, all of which are made in the U.S. :)

Sorry to tell ya bud but I have to believe your winch is manufactured in their China factory. Read down near the bottom at this link: MileMarker
I don't think there is a below $400 winch that is made in the U.S.

just4fun 03-02-2011 11:37 AM

Dam I guess my paper work that came with the winch saying made in usa is bs must be the little island next to japan spell usa. When I called Quadratec the sells man even told me it was made here and I should by it over the smitty built winch cause it was imported. Looks like I got burned again.

I dunno if you're being facetious or not but, really, none of Milemarker's electric winches are made in the US. :)

dmiller369 03-02-2011 11:42 AM

well im really considering the rc9500 winch. does anyone have this, or has heard anything about it?

for the winch and mounting plate together im looking at about 333.00 before taxes cause of 10% discount.

333 (cost of winch set up)divided by 75(cost of tow truck) is about 4.5 times.

im sure ill get my moneys worth untill i can afford a WARN. t

RC also has a 2 year warrenty!

just4fun 03-02-2011 12:05 PM

I don't know what im being other then being a little mad cause I don't like being told one thing and its another. Ill get over it im a big boy now and have been feeding myself since I was 30. It was hard enough to buy a winch knowing that its alot of money and it wont get used much. And I really wanted to buy a warn but just couldn't see spending my house payment on one.

just4fun 03-02-2011 12:25 PM

This just teaches me to do more research on the products that I buy.as far as liken the winch I've only used it once and that was to re spool the cable after I installed it. It was a tight fit on the poison spyder bumper.
