Steering wheel audio controls

I just recently bought a 2011 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. I have not had it a week and the steering wheel audio controls on the back and the step and reset buttons on the fron of the steering wheel quit functioning but the cruise control still works. Does anybody know what might have happened and, if so, how to fix it?

Take for service.

Same thing happened to mine yesterday. Called my service advisor, he told me to honk the horn. I did and it reset everything and they work again. He said he has had 3 calls so far about this and they are working on a fix. (something in the clock spring in the horn that is shorting out the audio and step controls in the steering wheel). I'll let them find a fix and take it back for service someday, but until then...happy honking!

I just bought a 2011 Jeep Wrangler Sahara and today I'm experiencing the same problems listed above, I'll try this horn honking thing and see if it works... but I have Keyless entry, the horn sounds every time I lock the doors on the thing, wouldn't it reset it then?

No, its the act of actually pushing the button on the wheel that moves the contacts, that is what would, if, it fixes the problem.

I'll give it a whirl and see how it turns out. Allegedly by above posts it's not an issue that has been across the board with Wrangler owners but I'm sure that at some point there will be some sort of recall for them if this issue persists.

Honking the horn worked for me.

Richd1963 03-19-2011 12:01 AM

I was wondering why every time I see those new 2011 Jeeps on the road they are honking their horns. Now I know they are just trying to get their radios to work.

Just tried the same thing with my Sahara, and it worked like a charm. Thanks for the tip!

Hello from Canada, my Tim's cup was empty, honking the horn did not help

2011rubiconman 04-08-2011 07:43 AM

Same problem with my Rubicon. If you don't want to honk your horn you can also smack your steering wheel on the side. Hit it like it owes you money and your buttons will work again. Or Honk if you like the attention.

Honking the horn worked for me too !!! Thanks for the info. and I hope they figure out how to fix it soon. :flowers:

mybusiness42 05-04-2011 06:00 AM

I had my 2011 for 3 weeks and had this same problem. As advised in this thread I struck the steering wheel (with the direction of the strike being towards the steering column) at the 2 o'clock postion. Worked like a champ. I did not read about honking the horn until after I struck the steering wheel, otherwise I would have tried that first. Either way, I'm good to go. Thank you Wrangler Forum and fellow Wrangler owners!

Steering Wheel Radio Controls

2011 Jeep Wrangler owner here.... 3 months old..... honking the horn worked Thanks to all for your help. I am concerned about the gremlins in my jeep. First the accelerator light (running erratic and stability light coming on and now this with the steering controls. I hope this is not a preview of things to come. Other than that I like driving my Jeep.

So glad I found this thread before I took mine in for service! Thanks!

kg4giy 06-20-2011 08:09 AM

Oh, you have got to be kidding me...OK, off to honk the horn...my controls also quit this morning...

And wouldn't you know - it worked. Nice little bug...er...feature that.

Leicajh 06-21-2011 08:14 PM

? My 09 Rubicon does not have this switches!

sdm 06-23-2011 02:36 PM

That is like the General Lee horn, honk the horn and it fixes everything. way to go Chrysler.

gregaf3 07-13-2011 09:19 AM

That is some funny stuff....

but seriously when the dealer tells you to do quick fixes like this and says it is a known problem... not taking it in or calling corporates customer service hot-line will take longer for Jeep to fix the issue...

Just like any corporate office they weigh cost into everything. I can guarantee you that there is some guy up in corporate saying... well we sold 500,000 jeeps this year, and we have had 220 failures, then he inputs all of his info into a graph and shows some low ass failure rate and decides that it is not a wide spread problem and they will never issue a recall

Greep 07-19-2011 01:30 PM

This is crazy... mine stopped working on the way to work today... I figured the 105 days melted something. I'll try the horn after work... mine's a 2012 also...

Greep 07-19-2011 02:39 PM

I meant to say mine's a 2011 also... wishful thinking?

a 2011 perhaps.. for the CANADA GUY, just beat the wheel harder. That's how they fixed the yj's back in the day. They also kicked the tires and cursed with a 50% success rate.

desertgoose 07-19-2011 04:00 PM

 Who needs audio controls on the steering wheel anyways? The stereo is mounted about 6" away from the wheel, is it that hard to straighten your elbow? :D

Greep 07-19-2011 10:53 PM

Honking the horn worked! I figured you guys were messing with me!

Today I brought my 2011 Wrangler Sport into the dealer I purchased her from for the 6000 mile service. Even though I have not had any problems since performing the "fix" as quoted above, I mentioned my earlier steering wheel audio control issue and they ended up doing the following (as per my invoice):

"Flashed CCN with TSB 08-038-11 for steering wheel control concern."

From what I understand, they basically uploaded some sort of software update to the computer inside my jeep. Evidently there is some sort of an official Jeep fix for this issue. I was not charged for this since it is still under warrenty.

Another success

3000 kms on a new 2011 Wrangler. Left stearing buttons stopped working (channel change and front computer reset) and right buttons (volume) but the cruise control worked. Never been off-roaded, plain and easy city/highway driving.

Honked horn once and all the buttons worked again consistently.

Thanks. Saved a visit and probably wasted time at a dealer for likley and electrical check and 1 hour sit around.

CHEERS.
