In cab tire carrier
 
When I went to a 33" tire I moved the spare into the tub. Right now it is leaning against my aluminum truck box and strapped to the floor.

A friend of mine just got a welder and is willing to help me construct a better way to mount the spare in the tub. (I have an LJ and no back seat BTW) The center hole that the center of the wheel will bolt to would be about 16" on angle from the tub floor, roughly half the height of the 33" tire. Over all height of the carrier will be about 24" and will bolt through the tub floor with 4 grade 8 bolts and nuts. I'm thinking it will be welded together using 2"x1/4" flat steel stock. It would be positioned much like it is now as close to the box as possible - hopefully giving me a little more storage space in back. Here is a rough sketch of what I have in mind:

Thoughts, concerns, design flaws and suggestions welcome!

He should make me one too:) Haha just messin my 33 is flat in back. I want to get an in cab mount constructed. What kind of truck box is in your jeep? Like from what truck.

It's from Harbor Freight. All aluminum and about $190. I got it at my local store but I think you can get it on line too. Google Harbor Freight truck box.

Looks great gus, I too am looking into an In-cab carrier. I like rokmen's setup on the Freak, but it would take up too much valuable space in my DD.

The only problem I see with any in-cab mount is the weight lifting the spare in there. But you shouldn't do it often so I wouldn't see it as that big of a problem. I really like my tailgate exposed for those drop-offs. If you fab something let me know, I'm drawing up ideas as well!

Gus will the flat stock have enough strength to hold the tire I would possibly use square tubing if I was you. I figure the flat stock would bow (spelling) with the weight of a 33 on it. I may also make it adjustable so if you decide to use a bigger tire later.

Good question about strength. I was trying to figure out a way to brace the flat stock so it would be strong enough without adding too much weight. Maybe another brace across the back but I think 1/4" thick flat is pretty strong. The guy who is going to weld it suggested tubing too. I might draw one up with tubing.

I guess to make it fit a 35" tire all I would need to do is make the center hole and inch higher from the tub, but I was thinking that it would be best if the weight of the tire was resting on the tub floor so I don't know.

I think once the tire is bolted down, or strapped in your case since itll be on the mount all that weight will go to the floor anyways. So whether or not its directly touching shouldn't matter. I wanted to stand mine up side ways, but then I would have to move anything that I place beside it out of the way to release the tire from the carrier.

I was hoping I would not need to strap it at all. I was thinking some kind bolt/wing nut design that would go through the center hole of the wheel and a hole in the cross brace. Or thread the hole in the cross brace and use a threaded rod with a "v" handle like some tire carriers use.

X2 on using tube instead of flat stock.
tube is going to be much more rigid, and hold up better.
it may be a little more work, but it will be worth it in the end

The more I think about it I think you're right. Tubing might be the way to go. Most tire carriers are made from tubing...for a reason I suppose. But I think I would keep the base that gets bolted to the floor flat stock. Thanks for all the thoughts. It's still in the planning stages and I appreciate the input!

Thats exactly what I mean, I was just saying strap as in how it sits now. Whatever it is attached to snugly itll put its weight on it. I'm going to draw up my idea tomorrow and see what you think.

Excuse the nasty drawing Gus. The tire would attach to the flat plate of course. The flat plate would make it adjustable using 2 grade 8 bolts on each end attached to the tubing arms the bottom backside (toward tailgate of jeep) of the tire would rest on tub. The measurements would be your own I dont have a TJ to get measurements on to add them. The tubing would also add structural integrity to it. You could also use flat plate between the rails on the ninety degree side. I would personally leave the tailgate side plate that way you don't have to put bolts in in the tight angle of the triangle. Sorry for the rambling if you want me to explain it while not drinking let me know.

You might consider angle iron. Would be easier for the cuts and would be much stronger than flat and would still be overkill which is what you want.:thumb:

I got a LJ myself. I like the tool box idea you got going on there. And I too have been knocking aroung the idea of a in cab spare tire mount. I'm curious to see what you finaly come up with. I'm just curious on how much useable space you have in your jeep? Mine is and will have to be a daily driver.

Use the mounting holes for the seats as the mounts for the spare carrier...

Just an idea. I had a 90 F150 and it had like a big nut with a handle on it that used a big carrage bolt and i reused that when i made a tire carrier in the bed. might be worth lookin in to

I think combining your drawing idea with angle stock might be a good option. I do like the idea of using angle because it is stronger than flat and easier to work with than tube. Should be plenty strong for this application. then using that horizontal flat plate as the mounting place it could be mounted in two locations depending on the tire side just by drilling two more holes 1" higher on each upright angle.

And that probably made no sense either and I'm sober.

This post died out long ago, just wondering if any of you ever ended making one of these?? I have an LJ and am looking to bump up to 35's and want to clean up the back of my rig.

I ended up screwing a couple 2x4s to the back of my aluminum truck box and leaning the tire against it and strapping it down with ratchet straps.

As long as you dont have a back seat you could probably flat mount it in the tub too

I see that and it looks like it works pretty good. I still have my back seat, true I rarely use it, but I do want that option. I was contemplating gabbing something up so that it sits on an angle with the lower end is where the back of the back seat is and also making it so that it could rotate (hinges or similar concept) to make unmounting the spare a tad easier...I will probably just end up throwing it in the back, but I do like to fab things up when I have time...

The cross bar.. The tire rests on. The back seat still fits. If I had to do it over again. I'd build it without a back seat so she doesn't stick out so far.
