Newbie Lookin For Tranny Advice
Ok so the tittle seems a bit..... odd but I do have a question about transmissions and wanted to see if anyone on here had ever tried to swap out their 4WD tranny for a 2WD.

I have a 2000 Wrangler (TJ/YJ???? IDFK?) which I've been driving since '02. With fuel prices being what they are and a 40-60 mile one-way commute I have GOT to do someting about MPGs. The Wrangler is a 2000 4.0 Sport with a manual transmission. I currently get about 16 MPG.

I read on that you can increase efficiency by simply removing the forward drive shaft. This seems easy and practical as it could be replaced when needed but I don't know how much this will improve fuel economy.

I'm wondering if it would be possible/advisable/practical to swap out the entire tranny for a 2WD model possibly from a Cherokee. My thought is this would eliminate the bulk and weight from the transfer case an drastically improve the MPG.

On a separate note if anyone has a cure-all for the dreaded "death rattle" I'd love to know. I swapped the steering stabilizer a last summer and that cleared it up but true to form... it's baaaaack!

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

First of all welcome to the forum. You have a tj so you should direct your questions to the tj forum. There is a really good write up that is a "sticky" in the jk forum the will help with death wobble or dw, not rattle.
As far as removing the front drive shaft to improve mpg, don't waste your time. A complete tune up and careful driving will trod far better results. FWIW 16 mpg is about what you should expect.

You also need to keep in mind the up front cost of such a transmission swap. Why spend $2-5k on such a swap when the payback time could be 5 years? You are much better off buying a beater car that gets high MPG. I just bought a 4 cylinder Saturn myself for $1500, payback will be in less than 1 year with my savings
