Painting my flares and hard top question

Hey gang.

In my sig is my 98 TJ. well I'm broke as most of us are and looking for a cheap paint up and wanted to paint mu faded flares and Tan hardtop, I wanted to paint them all black. My question is should I use that paint from krylon for plastic or a spray dye like for plastic or something else altogether. Appreciate any feedback on it!

I would use primer and then paint separately.. but there are many ways to go about it.

The most important step in re-finishing a plastic/rubber piece from an automobile is the pre-paint prep work. I would advise giving each piece a good wash with a towel and some plain old Comet powder from under the sink. This gets rid of any film/oil/grease/dirt that might keep paint from sticking and/or make bubbles, runs etc.

heard Krylon Fusion is good for the flares (and cheap) and u-pol raptor/line-x, similar bedliners are good for the flares and hard top. Don't see why the Fusion wouldn't work for the top other than might be hard to do without runs and/or pooling just b/c so much flat surface to cover. Either way as you have already read, prep the surface area extremely well or it will all be for nothing

That thing is BA!! Your going to paint your whole Jeep Matte Black with Krylon?

_Havok 03-10-2011 04:45 AM

yup, and a satin clear coat too, should take bout 7 cans of each, plus a primer

DerekM 03-10-2011 11:43 AM

I think you should update this as you go along with some pictures too!! I really want to do that, but I do not know how to go about it.

_Havok 03-10-2011 06:15 PM

ok bought paint and primer and fusion paint for flares and top and i'm out $45.00. only thing left is clear coating, that will have to wait til payday, pulling the Jeep in tonight to start, will update along the way.

If you paint the body, use gloss, and clear it with a few coats of gloss, make the final clear what ever finish you want to end up with.... Gloss is harder.

Tannerr 03-10-2011 09:40 PM

Can you only get the Krylon paint in spray bombs, or can you get quarts and what not to put through a gun too?

_Havok 03-11-2011 04:10 PM

Well my wife went into labor...LOL. so everything on hold.

Whobeme 03-11-2011 05:03 PM

it's about 6 months later and no fading yet.

DerekM 03-12-2011 08:51 PM

Congratulations!! My wife and I had our first a month ago.

bwilburn 03-13-2011 01:29 AM

Congrats. Our youngest is 15 now but our oldest just had a baby. Makes me feel old. But anyways, I used Rust-oleum X-2 rattle can satin black on my flairs. I have been to the carwash a few times and they seem to be holding up good.
