99TJ 33" tires with a 2.5L

I am new here so forgive me if this has been asked before. I have a 99 TJ with a 2.5L and manual transmission that I would like to put a 3" Zone Lift on. I need to know what I can exspect as far as daily driving goes if I run 33" tires. I know I should regear but its not in the budget right now. Like I said this is my daily driver but it never sees anything over 65 mph normally around 55-60. My main consern is I dont what to tear anything up. Any help you can give me would be great.

yeah i know how u feel i got the same 2.5 engine and 31's look to small with my lift i would go with 32's to play it safe so u can at least pass a moped lol thats what i am going to do.

I've got a 98TJ 2.5L with a 4" Zone suspension lift and 33s as well as an automatic transmission. I haven't gotten around to regearing yet, and I'm still loving my Jeep. I held off on the lift and tires for so long so that I could do the regearing at the same time, but I ended up getting impatient and just pulled the trigger on everything but the regear. I wish I had put the lift on much sooner.

Also, I drive over 100 miles round trip for work, and I'm also finishing up college so when school is in session that adds over 35 miles to the trip. Needless to say I'm behind the wheel a good bit, and even so I still love the Jeep. Sure I'd love to have it regeared or even a 6cyl, but I'm much more happy with it now that its lifted than having to drive around stock.

You have 4.10 gearing now with that power set up from the factory. You will not tear anything up with 33 inch tires but the power will be lacking and also keep in mind that the dana 35 in the rear is the weak point here and the bigger the tires the more strain. You should put in 4.88 gears when you decide to do the change and perhaps a stronger axle shaft especially if you ever go off roading.

x2...I plan on putting 32's on mine after my deployment just so it's not overkill on the 4-banger...plus i've only got a 2" lift on it now so 33's is unnecessary till I upgrade

I know you guys are talking TJs but I have a yj with 2.5 l. With 35 inch km2s. Love it stock 4:10. Drive it every day. 65 sometimes 70 on the freeway. Very slow up hill though. But for the most part unless your trying to pass people it's does fine. As for the weak Dana 35 I know it's weak so I take it easy. I won't try anything stupid till I can afford to fix it right.

Thanks for all the replies. I dont do much offroading as time dont allow it now. The most it sees is driving across the farm fields once in a while. I plan on doing a engine swap and axl upgrades some time but it will be awhile. I had looked at the 2" BDS kit but I need new shocks,Springs and swaybar links now and the Zone Kit comes with all that. My only worry with the 33's is my drive is 75 miles round trip and it is a lot of hills but I dont get in a hurry.

I got an 05 TJ with the 4 banger and everything is stock as far as engine I was running 31's untill i got a great deal on a set of 15x10 and 33x12.50 and as far as speed unless im running down hill i cant get over 65 but dont like to i mean with the lift and any sway of the steering wheel it gets wobbly at high speeds but other than that it runs great everyone says you loose 6th or 5th gear i have a 6 speed and i can tell a difference in not using 6th as much i recently moved and pulled a loaded down trailer with furniture stuff for about 5 miles down back country rds which are pretty hilly on 31's i was having to stay in 5th and still loose speed going up hill but with the trailer kept it in 4th and no prob and the 4 bangers can screem 3.5 or 4k and be fine not that i would run wide open all the time but as long as your not racing anyone you'll be fine just down shift to make up hills and you'll be perfectly fine I love my setup as is and kinda thinkin of 35 but not sure if the dana 35 can handle it but when its paid off im changing axles and regearing and way bigger for a trail weekend rig. yea 33x1250 is fine on the 4 banger just loose a little bit of speed and my speedometer never changed checked the speed with a gps.

I just took it out today it was 68 degrees. They do fine. I don't abuse them too much cause Ive heard the same as you.

Jwyatt 03-10-2011 07:09 PM

If any it would be the dana 35. Many people run 35s with Dana 30. People will tell u to swap a ford 8.8 rear. Which I'd love to do later for now it's fine.

MikeMTJ 03-10-2011 07:26 PM

I run 3.73s with 33s on my four banger, and it's not great. You're gonna loose a couple mpgs, and you will feel it slow down. It's not the worst in the world, but 4.56 would be great.

By the way, you have 3.73 if it's factory. Autos didn't come with 4.10.

msmarlena 03-10-2011 07:47 PM

I have a 2.5 with a 4" suspension lift and 35" tires... Its my daily driver and I love it! =] I get good enough gas mileage and power..

operatorj 03-10-2011 08:36 PM

Mines a manual with 4.10's. I think I may just have to bite the bullet and run the 33's. Like I said I dont usually get up over 60 mph any ways. Thanks for all the help.
