questions galore...

ok, so here i am again with a little extra cash to throw into the "bottomless pit" i call a jeep!!! its funny how i have spent more on modifications than i have made in payments but i guess thats just how this jeep thing works. so here are the choices:

-smittybuilt 6" fender flares (pocket style)
-jks quicker discos
-rocker guards (all i have to pay for are materials to build)
-replace my skycrapper shocks with some OME shocks
-steering skid and diff covers
-new tires (sold the 33's i had sittin around to pay off a lawn
mower i just bought) i have 32X11.50's with about 30% tread
and am wanting to make the switch to 33's.
-rear bumper/tire carrier

any and all opinions welcomed. i know it is my junk and i know whats best for the way i use it but just looking for any pros or cons i havent thought of yet...

-smittybuilt 6" fender flares (pocket style)--personally i see no need for them, they are just to look good and keep from spraying mud, but who wants a clean jeep!

-jks quicker discos-- good idea escpecially since you have a lift i belive that just getting the disconnets and not even disconnecting them will help with you flex because of the lift, it will be even better w/ them disco'edthem, but it depends on the type of wheeling, if your not on rocks you may not need them

-rocker guards (all i have to pay for are materials to build)-- if all you need to pay for is the materials go ahead and make them, why not the materials shouldnt cost that much

-replace my skycrapper shocks with some OME shocks--very good idea, yet expensive, personally i know its a jeep and expect the ride to be less than perfect , (a lot less)

-steering skid and diff covers- good idea as well, if you can make the rocker guards the steering skid will be 10X easier, the diff covers will also be helpful, (especially if you do rocks or mud)

-new tires (sold the ones i had sittin around to pay of a lawn
mower i just bought) i have 32X11.50's with about 30% tread
and am wanting to make the switch to 33's.-- if your gonna need new tires soon why not pay the extra like $75 for 33's, af course if you have the 4 cyl.(well really either one) you have to know your gonna be losing even more power

i would also look at a aussie locker if your serious about wheeling

x2 I'm getting me one of these.:D

As for the fender flares, consider that some states require the tires be covered and not stick out so the flares may be required.

TN though seems like with a cool enough jeep you could talk your way out of a ticket,
plus i think you need to be pulled over for something else and then they can give you a ticket for it i believe kinda like a seat belt, it is kinda hard for them to see if you go by them really fast, (oh wait thats not possible ina jeep)

all jokin aside if it is the law though you may want to get them

I say get a Warn engine/trans skid plate

as far as the fender flares go: i understand that alot of people add them for purely cosmetic purposes but my jeep is also a daily driver. i hate going wheeling with the top on but if i dont i spray mud all over the inside. when all the mud gets inside i have to worry about getting it all over my uniform on the way to work the next day. personally i think that these would be a great add-on for me. dont really have to worry about the whole ticket thing, im a cop myself ;)

i would love to have a locker but a little out of my price range for now. i will probably do the rocker gaurds regardless of anything else i get. and i understand what you mean when you talk about knowing its a jeep and accepting the ride quality but have you ever had a set of skyjacker shocks? it feels like i am riding on bricks!!!

i believe it is gunna be between the flares, discos, or the shocks...

debruins 06-01-2007 08:30 PM

well between those three i would go with the shocks and these, put the cover on when you go wheeling, take it off at all other times;

you cant be pulled over for just not wearing your seatbelt in mass.? we can stop a vehicle soley on the fact that an occupant is not wearing a seat belt here in TN.

debruins 06-01-2007 08:34 PM

nope they need to pull you over for something else and then if your not wearing it then they can give you a ticket

but i dont think it makes sense, b/c you can get pulled over and then put your belt on
or you could be wearing ur belt and then if you get pulled over take it off to get your wallet from your pocket
or some get pulled over for ridiculous things and then only get a ticket for the no seat belt thing and nothing for what they were originally pulled over 4

i hear ya on that note. most of your laws that are currently in place make perfect sense and then some are just kinda out there. its a good thing that most cops dont care to much about off-road related laws because almost anything but a bone stock jeep is in some type of violation here in TN (bumper heighth, fender flare coverage, covers over off-road lights, bumper mods, etc...)

I would get the shocks.Do you have the hydro or nitro shocks?

BTW the locker we are talking about is only 250$ and there are no special tools needed to install it.

tiger22 06-01-2007 09:20 PM

how does the aussie perform on the road though? i currently have the hydro and they are terrible!!!

4.0l sahara 06-01-2007 09:22 PM

If in the front you can't tell it's there. If in the back you will know it's there.

4.0l sahara 06-01-2007 09:24 PM

most people put them in the front d30.:D

tiger22 06-01-2007 09:46 PM

is it safe to put it on the frot though? heard bad things about lockers and the dana 30...

mrbigjeep 06-01-2007 09:46 PM

shocks if its ridin bad...i hate the way crappy shocks ride knowing it could ride a lot better with different shocks.

aussie locker is safe for the 30...just not the 35...especially since your only running 32's

tiger22 06-01-2007 09:50 PM

why would it be better on the 30 if its a weaker axle? i will be switching to 33's soon so i have to keep that in mind also...

mrbigjeep 06-01-2007 09:51 PM

the 35 is the weaker axle....not the 30. i think your confused...the 35 takes way more abuse

4.0l sahara 06-01-2007 09:53 PM

even with 33's the 30 is fine with a locker

tiger22 06-01-2007 10:19 PM

big jeep... im not confused, just way too tires to be thinking right now. dont know why i was thinking about the 35 instead of the 30! gunna hit the sack and reply to this thread in the am.

thanks for all the help guys... maybe i will regain some sanity while sleeping!
