real benefits of installing a MML and BL
 
I've had the boxes for a while now; JKS MML and BL, but I've been really hesitant to install them. I have some very minor vibes that do drive me batty and I'd like them gone, but I'm not sure if this is the solution.

Add to that my lack of knowledge and the fact that the instructions on the MML are naming stuff that I'm not even sure if I know what they are and the BL needs a saw which causes a touch of panic. This is starting to feel like a disaster in the making.

And after all that, no offense to anyone, but I really hate the look of body lifts.

Am I overlooking a solution to the vibes? I dropped the t-case, but it didn't work. I alligned the tires and it didn't work. Is there something else? And what are the real benefits of installing a MML and BL? Is there anything other than getting rid of vibes?

Yes, I'm on the verge of talking myself out of doing this today...

What do you need a saw for when installing a BL?? I didn't have to use a saw for anything when I installed my 1 inch. The main reason for the BL is just kind of like a free inch of tire clearance with out making any sacrifices, and the 1 inch MML brings everything up in the front to eliminte vibes with lowering the tcase and losing clearance.

For bl you need to saw a little piece of the radiator bracket (if you have AC).. i'm in the middle of installing 2" BL on my and its going okay.. now let see if it will start up after i'm done, currently i'm suppose to have a bday party and am waiting for every one to arrive so i cant continue w/ my installation.. :D so far i'm ~3.5 hrs in and i've finished lifting the body i just gotta put some stuff back together and i'm done. also the one inch should be a little less work becaue you dont have to mess with the fuel filler neck.

the idea of the BL is a cheap way to gain clearance and no loss of handling,
the MML re aligns the driveline kind of like the Tcase drop does.

JKS is usually 1.25 so you shouldnt really notice the difference,and if you can it only means you need to beef up your bumpers and get some rocker guards ;)

Chris, I have installed so many darn body lifts on TJ's you can do them with youreyes closed. First off, there is NOTHING to cut with a 1" body lift. Nothing at all. When you go higher than 1" you SOMETIMES MAY have to trim some things, but it depends on the Jeep. I have never had to. The motor mount lift and the body lift should be done together, just because the t-case shifter linkages, fan shroud and a few other things that are attatched to the body and somehow/someway attatch to the engine trans need to be moved together. Dont do the body lift without the Motor Mount lift. You WILL have issues. The t-case shifter will feel weird, and possibly pop out of range, and you will hear the fan hit the shroud on hard wheeling when the motor mounts flex. Dont be afraid of the Body lift, its pretty easy if you have 1 or 2 floor jacks, a couple blocks of wood and some patience. But you will have to do them both before you try to drive it. I agree on the looks of a body lift. At least the one inch is not "overly" apparent except at the tailgate. My use of them was to squeeze one more inch out for bigger rubber.

BTW, I put my budget on yesterday and vibes, minor or major. I did make sure to go around and torgue everything down before we called it a day.

Chris for your vibes it's the MML that is going to help you. Raising the engine 1" helps point the tranny and tcase down a little bit more. Which in turn puts your dshaft at a little less of an angle. The BL is just as the rest of the boys have stated. Gives you a little more tire clearance and helps make room for everthing up front that gets lifted 1" from the MML.

Edit: Plus check out this pic. I have a 1" BL and you can hardly tell that it's there.

Ok, but....... the instruction on the MML say that "using a cutting tool, remove 1/4" from the length of the OE insulator stud."

How on earth do you do that without screwing up the threads? Bolts and taking stuff apart I can do, but cutting crap off, that's a different game for me. Can't glue that back on if I screw it up :D

There is no need to remove a 1/4" from anything while doing a 1" BL. Just remove and replace the stock body mounts wherever you find them. You won't even need to loosen the fan shroud since you are doing both at the same time. Just don't fire the engine until you have everything done. Floor jack with some wood blocks to raise the body is all the excess tools you will need.

This is for the motor mount lift though. You take off part of the stud then screw on a new one.

I'm sorry Chris, I complete jumped over the fact that you got MML pucks and not full replacement MM's. Let me see if I can find the directions for the JKS online to see if I can help.

Yeah, it looks like you might have to cut that. When you put that isolator stud down in the JKS block how far down in there does it go? Does it look like you could get away with out cutting it?

well when you cut a stud leave the nut on, put it all the way down, then once its cut take the nut off; this will insure that any new nut or whatever you will be able to start b/c if you dont then it is just all puckered up at the end and it wont og on, if you dont do this you'll never get a nut on there

Okay Chris, take it slow and be patient. Your hands are small enough that those mounts in the rear crossmember shouldn't be hard for you. :D

Sorry I didn't see this earlier Chris. You may have to cut the studs. All three I have done I have had to but I have heard of a few that did not. I used a sawzall and it took about 15 seconds each.

Jack, for the JKS BMML it uses a stud extender on each side, the receiver in the extender is generally not long enough to take the entire OEM stud hence the cutting.

Chris, if your vibes are being caused by your rear driveshaft this will likely cure them. TBH I don't like BL's either and did not need one to clear my tires but there are many other things they help with which is the reason I bit the bullet and put one on.

When I cut the stud, I just went around it with a grinder to put an angle on the top thread and I didn't have any trouble getting the extender to start on after that. But I like the idea of running the nut down onto the sutd, then cutting it and taking the nut back off, that should straighten the threads out fine!!

Didn't take a picture of it done yet but I took it out and the vibes are totally gone. :D

They're 31s and they're brand new. And that's part of the reason I didn't want to do the body lift, but I needed those vibes gone.

Thanks guys. The motor mount lift by the way was a freaking nightmare :D They didn't list crowbar in the instructions, but I needed one..... just saying.
