Inspection

I am about to buy a jeep from jersey, but I am worried about it passing inspection. Jeeps body is good, no rust, normal jeep leaks but nothing crazy, but I am worried about the lift.

it has a 4" suspension with 1" shackle. The tires are 33" but they stick out at least an inch, maybe two.

I read this in pa state inspection
"A tire’s tread extends beyond the outer edge of the wheel housing inclusive of fender flares."

Do you think it would pass or is this something that everyone gets busted for? I really want this jeep but I wouldn't want to buy it then it not be able to pass inspection for a major reason.

Thanks, new to jeeps here so be easy on me. :surrender:

i'd say.. buy it. if worst comes to worst, you'll have to scrape up some crappy looking fender flares from a junk yard to pass.. and just put the others on after. take it to someone you know and have worked with before.. they will probably be lenient.

Thanks blegan, but being a teenager not many of my friends are mechanics, they go to college or high school... ha. I asked a few buddies of mine who had k5's lifted trucks and my buddy who has a jeep where they took theirs and they all recommended the same place. Guess I'm goin there!

My 31's stick out an inch and it passed but this guy is a jeep guy so that helped. I do know someone who got pulled over for tires out past the flares and he got $100/ inch on all four tires and with 33's the was a hefty $800.

Most mechanics will overlook your tires as long as they're not sticking out more than 2"... The police will harass you no matter what if they're sticking out more than 1/2"

The mechanics i talked to said they can't stick out at all and the cop said the same thing.

they're TOO strict. most wouldn't even let 1/4" past the fenders.

Redneck07 04-12-2011 11:09 PM

Well i'll see friday at my hearing how it turns out cuz I'm fighting the ticket they i got for my tires stickin out. Cuz i knew nothing about this law and also the jeep was sold to me by a dealership that way. They could have atleast gave me a warning or a fix it ticket. I had it fix within a week of the ticket when i found out about the law

But the law is the tires are not allowed to stick out at all. so how is it too strict? Do u understand y?

So when Im driving home after gettin wasted at the bar, and I run someone over and the breathalizer blows a .08 I should get off right? cuz its
right at the limit but not over, so if they lock me up for DUI and vehicular man slaughter I can just tell them they are Nazis and they are being too strict.

Ignorance is not a defense. Save yourself the wasted day in court, and just pay the no points ticket. The stealership doesnt care about anything but F*&^ing u out of your money. I do agree that a fix it ticket would have been nice, but that depends of weather the cops in a good mood or not.

It not ignorance if the deaalership sells you a vehicle it should be legal to drive. If there is something on the vehicle that is not legal they should either fix it or tell you about it when you buy the vehicle so you can fix it. My whole point for fighting it is the fact i should've got a warning or a fix it ticket for a first time offence

Um... comparing tires sticking out of your fenders an inch, and driving buzzed and killing someone is like comparing apples and hand grenades.

If the dealership put a new inspection sticker on the vehicle, it is indeed their problem. I know in NY you can lose your inspector and dealer license for selling and passing a vehicle that isn't road worthy (aka legal).

But this is why I'm leaving my Jeep registered in NY. Less strict inspection laws :). And since I spend about half of my year up there, I'm still a resident.

Again, I'm suggesting a move to Michigan, we don't have inspections. But, you'd have to bring your own job with you.

Ouch! I've been warned unofficially by a local cop, and he said it would be $100. $100/inch is just ridiculous.

To the OP I wouldn't worry about it. Mine just passed inspection, and that is about how much my 33s stick out. I see so many vehicles driving around with tires sticking out way farther, I'm not very worried about mine. Hopefully MCE will get the wider flatties out soon so I can fix the problem and get some nice fenders at the same time.

My ticket was like 110.50 with all fees and stupid stuff added and the cop never mesured how far they were out. But i put 7" flares on so im good till they pull me over for my flares being to big

Trib 07-11-2011 01:05 AM

Funny thing about this is we put flares on to cover our tires, and the law says you can't have flares over so wide...lol. The law is ANY sticking out. I had one cop tell me (I'm a cop by the way) that the JK's aren't legal because they have NO body on the side, just flare sticking out...lol....funny thing is, he just got himself an '11 JK unlimited... :)

The law is there for safety, as far as kicking stuff up. As I'm NOT a nazi, nor a pr!ck, I'm all about safety. My ride has flares to cover the tires. After all, my kids and their friend's ride in my Jeep.
