Driveshaft "Knocking"
 
Hey guys, i wonder if anyone has run into this problem. I recently had a JB Super Short SYE installed in my TJ along with a Tom Wood Custom Driveshaft. The work was performed at a reputable drivetrain service center. While the modification cured my vibration problem, now I have a rather annoying "knocking" noise coming from the transfer case area. Don't notice it at higher speeds, only around 5- 15 MPH. It seems to be in the drivetrain. Is this normal with the Wood's driveshaft due to the "double" joint in it? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I have the TW shaft but with the non super short SYE.. No vibs or knocking. I would call the shop and let them know something is not right.. Could be a bad or mis-installed u-joint, or maybe even something in the SYE.

Yup, take it back and make them drive it. Since they installed it then they are responsible for it. Don't however let it go. Dshaft problems can cause you a multitude of drivetrain problems is not properly diagnosed and taken care of.

Have the tranny mount checked - I used to have the same symptoms you described (esp. when wheeling) and that's what it was. Does the shifter jump around when it does it?

That would be my guess too. I'm not sure why but my tranny mount broke a short while after I installed my SYE kit. Once replaced, it has been fine for nearly 100K miles.

You know what Jerry, same thing happened to mine. Put the poly mount in and had no more problems with that. My Dshaft issues have come from bad angle and a bad rebuild plus doin 80 on I-10 when the CV let loose and sent a massive shockwave up my drivetrain cracking both the Tranny case and the Tcase.

I'm thinking the problem might be from when tightening the lower four t-case mounting nuts, that the tranny mount itself might not be at its natural unstressed fore & aft position.

You know how the tranny mount lower mounting studs protrude through slots in the t-case skidplate? Maybe the Jeep needs to be driven a short distance or jumped up and down on so the tranny mount studs gets positioned fore and aft within those slots before the nuts are tightened. If the nuts are tightened when the mount is a little too far fore or aft, that might be how it breaks. :confused: Just a thought. :)

Don't notice any shifter jump.

Did the same install on my '04 with the jb conversions kit, and had a similar problem. Is it the d shaft yoke hitting each other? I fixed all noise and vibrations by cutting and lengthening my upper control arms on the rear end so that the lower U-joint was pointing directly at the t-case (read: 0 degrees). says you're supposed to do it with the tom woods driveshaft, didn't think it would make that much difference, but the rotated housing fixed all my problems.

K guys here's an update. Took my baby back to the drivetrain shop. Been there 2 weeks. They have tried everything. (I even took them a copy of this thread!) Pulled the SYE apart and rechecked, moved the rear driveshaft angle to 0, disconnected the front driveshaft, disconnected the rear driveshaft and adjusted, adjusted and adjusted! Problem is still there. Can only really hear it when coming to a stop, about 10mph to stop. They called Tom Woods and this was their suggestion: Reinstall the transfer case drop that it had originally when the body lift was added! My question is this: What is the whole purpose of the SYE and and new driveshaft if I gotta keep the transfer case drop? I mean this thing only has a 3.5" RE suspension lift and a 1" body lift! I that you should be able to go higher without this problem! Thanks for all the input!

Okay I'm just throwing this out there as a possibility. Do you all think that his shaft could be too long? And it's bottoming out on itself when he is braking?
