Jeep Trade for a 1979 Trans Am

Hey guys,

I am new here but not to jeeps, I have a question and I am looking to some feed back on this so if you would give me all the opinions that you have.

I have ran across this add on CL and was wondering if anyone out would even really trade a Jeep for that car. I mean it looks like its in ok to good shape.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks.

That car is bad@ss.....

RatherBNarizona 03-22-2011 11:19 PM

that thing is sick... but so are Jeeps :)

I'd stay away from that car. I could see signs of rust in the pics and its usually worse in person, plus the interior had missing glove box lid and other stuff. If you want a trans am... what do you have to trade for it???

Now THAT'S a TA!!!!!!!!!!!! The white one? errr oh not so much-but I am old school.

Seriously though-I can't see trading my Jeep for any TA. Maybe if I could have another Jeep to trade for the good looking TA------nah that prolly won't work either. I think he knows what he's got.

Thebandit1980 03-23-2011 12:13 AM

notice the jeep in the first pic? :punk: seriously though, I couldn't trade my T/A for a jeep, nor could I trade my jeep far a T/A. Gotta keep 'em both I guess:)

For starters, it's twisted up. Look at the fitment between the front of the driver's door and the fender, now look at the gaps on either side of the trunk. The hood looks a little skewed toward the passenger side front and the passenger side door looks like it fits well, so I'd bet it either got smacked on the driver's side front or the subframe has gotten weak from rot. It's obviously been repainted, probably from an accident repair. The body rust in the pictures looks typical for those cars, but not bad. The rust in the rocker seam on the driver's side might be cause for concern.
The engine has been bored .030 over, and on a 400, that's as far as you can go or the cylinder walls become too thin. He doesn't mention what heads are on the motor, so they're probably the garbage '79 smogger heads. Which means the intake and cam aren't doing a thing for it. Anything bigger than a 750 carb on that engine would be completely unnecessary. I'd bet my little 350 will run circles around that thing with a 670 carb, which is the same 670 carb I had on my old 400 that would have run circles around that t/a as well.
It's not to say it's not a good project car, but know what you're getting into before you buy.

I agree with Sinister. Also You would want to run the vin Number to be sure its a true TA. You can just type in 1979 Trans Am in a search engine and get lots of things on them to include value. But that one is just a project car, and needs lots of work.

Cloth seats and not T-top....pass!

joemd60 03-23-2011 06:35 PM

The deal breaker to me is the automatic transmission.

I had a firebrd, basically the same car. Check carefully behind the rear bumper...the frames go bad in that area and are very difficult if not impossible to fix to factory specs. They are fun to drive and easy to get in trouble with!

x2, i have owned alot of that body style camero/firebird ,and that car is a 2500$ car to the person who wants it real bad.(my opinion!)i'd hang on to the jeep unless you get car plus cash&ya want it real bad!:)

Same here, though I don't know if I'd be able to drive it unless I grew a mullet and got it permed, and bought a white leather suit to match the paint.

I have traded many times, usually hot rod/ muscle car for 4x4 or visa-versa. I would stay away from this car. The only 79 T/A's holding any value are the 10th anniversary.
Also stay away from the Olds 403/Auto cars. The Pontiac 400 cars all came with 4 speed and WS6 4 wheel disc brakes
