Changing Ring and Pinion Gears

Ok, thanks to everyone who helped me out on deciding on a body or suspension lift.. (i think im going to go with a 2-2.5" suspension lift, but prob 2", and a 2" body lift)... after seeing odd is he's jeep, i think i too am going to run 32-33" tires on it, but this leads me to my next question...

When i install the lift(s) with the new tires, i think i am most likely going to have to change the ring and pinion gears on both the front and back. Am I correct in thinking this? and do you guys have any reccomendations as to what size gears, what brand and all that stuff. Any information you guys have is greatly appreciated. Thanks again...

:o i feel kinda retarded for asking all these questions, but like i said, im pretty much starting from scratch with this jeep, so i have a LOT of questions... thanks guys

definitely regear...it will restore a lot of power that you lose. you don't have to do it right when you get the bigger tires but you'll probably wanna regear later on down the road anyway...

who knows though...you may be fine with the way it drives with bigger tires so wait until you've drove with the big tires for a while and then decide.

regearing is very expensive but most definitely worth it if your feeling a power loss which is definitely possible especially on the highway.

what motor do you have? 4.0 or 2.5?

jeeps&comics 06-10-2007 12:56 AM

4.0 with manual tranny

with a 4.0 if you go up to 33's you will need to re-gear..i suggest a 4:10..there are lots of gear co. that make a nice gear set..yukon, dana..etc..you will also need to get a larger carrier, and install kits..it's also a good time to, install new bearings and seals..possible locker, 30 spline shafts..etc.. or try looking around for a wrecked 2.5/4cyl..and just swap the whole assemblys..they came with 4:10's..or think about an 8.8 out of a ford..lots of options..

so im guessing runnin 4.10 front and 4.11 rear would be good with 33s?

NalinMFG 07-07-2007 12:44 PM

would someone mind elaborating on everything needed to regear? i have a 98 4.0 with 33's on 3.73's. 35 in the back and 30 in the front. i thought i read somewhere else that if i go to like a 4.56 i need to  SWAP alxes! because theyre not big enough? i saw 4x4groupbuy has front/rear with overhaul kit for $460. is that all i'd need to buy or do i need bigger axle's/housings? i dont do the whole jacked sideways rock crawling, just some trails/mud/DD. any input you guys got i'd appreciate it- thanks

also, how hard is this to do yourself? i know my way around the toolbox, but i didnt know if this is like "auto transmission surgery"... something i do need to pay a professional to do so i dont screw it up.

If you want to go to 4.10 gears do like he said and find a set of axles from a 4cyl. jeep. they have the gears you want and they would just be a bolt in of around 300 bucks. I am going to have a set but you are way to far and I dont think it would be worth shipping.
