yj 4 cyl

I have a 1990 yj with 33s and im looking to regear the front and rear diff but not sure what to upgrade it to a 456 or 488. 5th gear is as useless as a screen door on a sub and didnt change much from the 30in tires to the 33s. Suggestions anyone?

I would say pass 4.56 and move right to 4.88's with your setup. I would also say that before you dump money into the dana 35, look at a ford 8.8 swap or dana 44 rear.

Now increasing that ratio will give me more rpms right? The diffs will be spinning faster?

Yes the rpm's will be up.

What gears do you have now? I'm not sure about YJ's but my TJ and most 4 banger TJs have 4.10's.

Stock gears which i think are 410 as well

I've got an 04 TJ with the 2.4L 4cyl, manual trans,4:88's and I'm running the 4.5" RE lift with 33X10.50x15 BFG KM2's and I think its perfect, all gears are fully useable. Only thing else I would like to have is what everyone else wants and thats a lower crawl gear.

OP 4:88s are at the limit of the dana 30 any lower and you run the risk of snapping ring gears/pinions

Look into the teralow 4:1 low range kit for the 231 they will help you get a lower crawl ratio.

i have a 6 but i ditched the stock axles and went with a toyota 8 inch and a waggy 44 with 4.88s for relativly cheap and i run 35s but i could run 38s just have new 35s so dont see the point not to mention i go damn near anywhere cause im locked front and rear but i would say 4.88s would be a good ratio for 4 cyl

You can play with this calculator if you want to see what gearing and tire size does to your rpm.
