Soft top under hard top? (pics)

Hey guys quick question. :wavey:

I'm looking to grab this LJ tomorrow and it posed a question that is not particular to the Jeep that I am curious about. I owned a YJ before but only had a soft top.

It is to my understanding that on a TJ/LJ you either have the soft top on, or the hard top. Most with dual tops declare the day when winter is coming they put the hard top on etc. etc.

The ad states it has BOTH hard and soft tops. The hard top is clearly on.

I can see what "looks" like some of the hardware for the soft top and in one pic there appears to be a bunched up soft top in the "trunk" area.

So question is- is it possible to have a mounted but "down" (topless) soft top on and then install a hard top over it ?

Here are some pics to clarify. I only put up ones that support my theory of having the soft top underneath the hard top.

In the first pic you can see the (name?) "V-shaped" elbows that stretch out the soft top.

You can see the hardware there in the back where it would be.

At the top right there appears to be in the inside of a soft top.

And more.

I'm looking to nab this one up- its in my price range, below market value, in great condition and " HOPEFULLY" has dual tops

Any help will be appreciated!

I have just under 375 posts or so on this forum and all have been on the TJ/LJ forum for months! Time to become legit!

I mean it definitly looks like soft top hardware. Can't really see if the fabric is all there from the pics, but i am curious as well. I've never seen a hard top and soft top on at the same time lol. I would make sure the soft top windows are all there i know mine wont fold nicely with the windows still zipped in. But good find i wanted the LJ but couldn't locate one in my price range or even close to my area lol

I think you are probably correct-and yes it would be possible. If I had a hard top wouldn't do that though-noise, rattles,/ less space for hauling storing things, windows may get scratched-but understand why a dealer would do that.

Good Luck!! :)

Yes, many are shipped that way, with one to be removed on delivery to the owner. I'm sure the PO put it in to sell. They may have left it installed the entire time, but it eats up all your room in the back, and may cause rubbing/wear in the fabric of the soft top if left installed.

Yeah see I wasn't too sure- like I said aroudn here it seems like its one or the other.

I was thinking the same thing about the windows- they would have to be taken off or would get scratched a lot. Only trouble is those are really the only pics I have of the "hidden soft top" lol. The other pics just show the exterior of the Jeep.

It would be solid if I got both and the soft top is in good condition-

When thinking about purchasing a TJ/LJ one of my ideas was grab one with a hardtop, sell the hardtop, buy a soft top and use the difference on mods. But I would second guess that if it came with both.

I'd love to have the hard top for Chicago winters. My YJ had a soft top only with half doors

After 10 minutes of warming up and about 5 of driving it would be ok heat-wise but at 55mph+ those half door uppers are flimsy as can be

Hardtop/soft combo packaged Jeeps rolled off the assembly line with the soft top folded down and hard top on.

When I got my 01, it had the hard top, with the soft top rolled up in the back. I dont think the previous owner ever used it though because it still had the shipping stuff wrapped around it, and looked brand new

OH ok so its not that crazy. Usually when dealers sell the two top deal, used anyway, they just throw the soft top in the back. haha I suppose this is better.

Looks like, if all goes well, I'll get a combo deal.

The rest of the rig looks pretty clean to me. I'll have to check it all myself but it seems like a clean Jeep. I would've seen it earlier but its in the shop getting an Air Flow Sensor replaced. Have to wait until tomorrow :banghead:

First you need to check and see if the soft top windows are there and what condition they are in. I'm going to assume (remember what they say about assuming) that the po bought it with the hard top and purchased the soft top later. Like me, they removed the hard top never to be used again and when they traded it in just put the hard top on over the soft top. I would not recommend using it this way. If it has the sunrider top, the plastic pieces that attach over your doors are pushed down between the tub and roll bar. Oh and make sure that the door surrounds are with it as well.

IX2 on the above. The windows for dual top models are delivered in seperate boxes. If the PO never used them, are they with the vehicle. If not LJ windows are tough to get and cost A LOT.

I'll have to check when I get there.
Worst case scenario is I sell the hard top and buy a new soft top then spend the difference on mods. :thumb:

When I purchased my factory dual top Sahara used it had the soft top in the "down" position with the hard top in place. What other posters have mentioned is true, they shipped from the plant this way. Again, make sure the following is in the Jeep as well:
1. Two door surrounds with clips for the sunrider feature
2. Two rear side windows preferably in good condition
3. One rear window preferably in good condition
4. One tailgate bar that attaches to the soft window to the tub
5. Two brackets mounted on the top rear of the tub on either side of the tailgate for clipping the tailgate bar into.
6. Two brackets, one on each side of the main hoop, which the soft top support bars attach to.

Take it home, put the hard top in the garage for summer storage, and look for sunshine.
