Bummer news...
Hello all,
Finally took my new to me jeep in yesterday to the dealership to have it looked at. I have only had it 3 months and thought that I had been away from a standard transmission too long and that's why sometimes it seemed like I couldn't take off in first very well without looking like an idiot that had never driven a stick. Then I thought maybe I just need to get used to driving this jeep and this clutch but that was not the case.
Turns out I need my u-joints replaced, and told me I should go ahead and get new brake pads and get my rotors turned....then said the reason I couldn't take off worth a crap was because I have a bad rear seal on the engine that is somehow allowing engine oil into the clutch housing which is causing the clutch to slip which explains the shuddering effect I get when taking off. Yay for me....About $1500 to $2000 and I should be good to go. Too bad that isn't pocket change to me.
The really crappy thing, well couple of crappy things, is that number one I should have taken it to a qualified technician before I bought it and had it looked over....and I didn't. Stupid me figured a 2004 TJ with 59K miles should be in pretty good shape. The tech at the dealership said that the people who had it before most likely knew this work needed to be done and got rid of it to avoid the cost of fixing it, probably abused it and lastly never took care of it. I'm disappointed of course but know I should have had it checked before buying. :banghead: Lesson learned. Getting it fixed next week and know that it will be well taken care of from now on....still love my jeep nonetheless.

Sorry to hear the bad news-but on the brighter (not truly bright will still cost) those are things you won't have to worry about with regular maintenance. :)

Are you sure they are not trying to play you for a fool? I would have it inspected by other trusted mechanics and get a second opinion. They don't call them "stealerships" for a reason. Overpriced and sometimes tell you extra stuff is wrong with your vehicle. If it is what they say it is, get under your vehicle and mark what they said was wrong with a yellow paint marker... or just make inconspicuous marks on those things and after you get your vehicle if they are still the same then you have just been robbed.

But this is not always the case.

I think they may be trying to take you for a sucker. I hate to say it, but all of those jobs are not that hard to do. U-joints are not that hard at all, many people replace them on the trail side if one breaks. Brake pads and rotors? That is definality a driveway job. I understand that you may be intimadated by the potential of the unknown, but a couple of friends, pizza and a cold beverage of their choice and you should be golden.

As for the rear main seal, do you see oil spots on your driveway? If not is there oil on the bottom of the transmission to engine points. No oil there, no oil on the ground, I doubt the rear main seal is bad.

I would invest in a decent repair manual and some tools rather than fork out 1500 to 2000 to fix problems that may or may not be there. Also, being a Jeep girl, MANY guys will be very happy to lend a hand to help keep your Jeep on the road. Good luck with your Jeep and welcome to the forum.

Try not to feel bad. I had my TJ looked over before I bought it by a garage that specializes in Jeep outfitting and they missed the fact that my tj didn't have the harness that makes it a dual top. The hard top it came with had a detached defroster. They did point out two issues a leak at the speedo and a u-joint that is a hair loose. Since then the boots on the sway bar need to be replaced, there is a squeak every time I release the brake pedal, put two hundred into getting the grill painted and can't wait til The Maine's Yearly State Inspection happens. I thought getting it at a dealership would be a safer bet. Hurts to look on craigslist now at the possibilities at half the cost or a little more and I could have add on mods too for less money. And yes...lessons learned.
