Long arm kit

Hey there Jeepers. I'm looking into a long arm kit for my jeep. It's already got a 4" lift and some other stuff. Just looking for something to give me better articulation on the trail. Here are the kits that I've been looking at:

1: Adjustable Long Arm Upgrade Kit Jeep Wrangler TJ 97-06 - eBay (item 330554209951 end time May-15-11 20:12:12 PDT)

^^I bought some lower control arms from these guys before. Seems to be good quality, lots of safe adjustability. They told me 4" on the kit.

2: Jeep Wrangler TJ Long Arm Upgrade Lift Kit 1997-2006 | eBay

^^This is nice because it has the swivel head on one side that makes installation much easier. Little more expensive though.

I'm looking for something that is bolt on. I know that I will also need to cut the lower ca brackets off as well. That wont be a problem.

Any help would be appreciated! If there are kits that I'm over looking please let me know also.

Looks like they copied the Rough Country kit to produce their own... but what is their warranty? How is their customer service? Will they sell you new bushings?

Things to think about.

99TJCrawler 04-20-2011 09:48 PM

Off the ebay page:

Warranty: All our parts come with a limited lifetime replacement warranty. If you manage to break it, we'll replace it.

I dont think that their customer service is that good judging by their ebay feedback. Apparently their shipping is SLOW lol. I may send them an e-mail about it before I purchase, should I choose to, to come up with an arrangement for a date that they will promise to ship by.

I ordered the Rough Country Long Arm upgrade from JC Whitney for $765 (got 15% off and free shipping.) And you wont find it any cheaper then that. It shipped today. I have always liked RC's products and you can't beat their customer service. I would stay away from the no-name long arm.

wow, 765?! thats a pretty good price for that kit, I'm gonna have to see if I cant find that! Still have the link?

For those of you that have already done this, is this a big difference? Can you feel a difference on the road? What are the pros/cons?

I would go rough country, i have the 4in "X" kit, it a short arm kit but it comes with adjustable control arms that have flex joints, the arms are pure beef, and made very well imo.

Irongrave 04-23-2011 04:43 PM

if you want long arms check out clayton offroad Clayton Off Road - Wrangler 97-06 TJ

MoA 04-24-2011 05:03 AM

i personally would only go with rubicon express, clayton, or other good brand kits..

rough country kits are notorious for their wear and tear.. you get what you pay for.. although i havent been around much this past year and a half.. damn military keeping me stuck out in deserts.. but like i said.. you get what you paid for.. go with something of BETTER quality..

KBR97 04-24-2011 09:06 AM

Rubicon Express went down the tubes. I would look into companies like clayton, teraflex, fabtech, rockkrawler....

I went down this road. I was running a RC 4" and was planning on upgrading to a LA kit. The RC LA upgrade was what I was going to do. After speaking with many people on the forum and giving Dirk at DPG Offroad a call I ditched my RC junk altogether and installed his Super Ultimate TJ kit. 2.5" OME springs and Nitro long travel Sport shocks, JKS CA's, JKS adj track bars, JKLS Quicker Disco's, JKS 1.25" BL, Brown Dog motor mounts, TCdrop and 2" bumpstops front and rear. I kept my 33x12.5x15 tires. The ride quality is unbelievable and I have way more flex than before with a lower center of gravity.

I am glad I did not add more RC crap.

Wait...so you mean that there is now a 3rd party copier? Someone else is copying from a company who already copies everyone else?
And this is what the 4x4 world is coming too...cookie cutter suspension kits, and completely unoriginal product design....:nonono:

That means RC stuff is finally better than someone else's. Scary.

Nick, you did a MML and TC drop? Were the Brown Dog mounts not and inch taller than stock?

Yes the Brown Dog motor mounts are 1" taller than stock.

99TJCrawler 04-24-2011 10:30 AM

So what makes on long arm kit better than the other? The thickness of the tube walls? The construction?

what they build the kit out of is part of it. the bigger part is how it mounts and the joints they use. If your running say a Clayton kit with the super pivot type ends VS an RC kit with rubber ends the clayton kit is going to give you a lot more flex with the same springs.

99TJCrawler 04-24-2011 10:47 AM

I took a look at the Clayton kit and I can not figure out where the heck it mounts. Is it really that big of a difference from a urethane or rubber mount?

It is not the bushings it is the joints.

Fixed very little flex

I'm pretty sure RC has joints like those

Yep sad ain't it. :nonono:

Rough Country did design this kit in a specific way, although similar, it's bolted on differently to a few other mfg's. I have seen it up close recently, and it looks solid. I just don't like how low the lower arms mount below the frame.

If I were to be looking at bolt on long arm kits, Rock Krawler and Clayton would be the only two I'd be looking at. Pricey yes, but well worth the money.

2003x 04-30-2011 04:56 PM

kits installed, very happy with it.
