Grinding into reverse
 
Hey folks.
Whenever i reverse I can feel the teeth of the gears. I just go slowly and ram it in.
I suspect it has something to do with the syncromesh.
Is there an additive that may get things going? Is there any workaround?

Before shifting into Reverse, do a quick/momentary shift into 1st (or any forward) gear and then shift into Reverse. No need to do anything but keep the clutch pedal on the floor for the momentary shift into 1st gear before shifting into Reverse. Your shift into Reverse should be grind-free if you use that technique which is required for any transmission that does not have a synchronized Reverse gear as most Jeep transmissions don't have.

Thanks for the quick and detailed reply, unfortunately that doesn't help.
I tried putting it into first and then into reverse, but it still grinds :(
How long can it last this way? I believe it is the ax-15 transmission as I have a 6 cyl..

The ax-15 is unsynchronized. You must be at a complete stop when shifting into reverse. I shift into 4th then reverse and it's smooth. Doesn't really matter what gear you shift into, the point is to stop the mainshaft from spinning and to "align" the gears. There is no magical oil or additive that will help.

Yes, a complete stop is a must. Then put it in a forward gear before reverse.

Thanks for all the suggestions. But it still grinds :(
I put in 4th then down into reverse and I can feel the teeth. I just kinda ease it in. The TJ is completely stopped
What is causing that and what does the fix entail.
Would changing the oil help...grasping at straws..I know.

My 97 tj 4.0 5spd. Does this. And has done it for years and years the only way to minimize the grind is to come to a stop then put it back into a forward gear then go to reverse. It helps but does not eliminate it. My 2cents

If it's still grinding then something is still spinning and you aren't doing something right.

If it doesn't help, my bet is you don't quite have the above recommended technique down. It's worked on every single manual transmission I've ever owned since the sixties since the old '57 VW I learned it in back in the early 60's. :)

Remember the 3 speed on the column w/o syncro 1st gear. I learned to drive with that setup.

We called it floating the gears when you could shift without using the clutch on the ol 3 on the tree

Good memories of my Air Force Chevy pickup truck from 67-69 that had 3 on the column. That was a cool truck we used to semi-race on a back dirt road between my control tower's receiver and transmitter sites. We kept unofficial records for who could make it the fastest, I guess that was my first official offroading and intro to a 3-speed on the column. :D

I learned on a farm, sent out of the city to get off the streets, when I was 13. Some of the best memories growing up. I wish my kids had that experience. Nothing like that in the burbs.

My 05 tj has been doin this for bout 2 months and it got really OLD! I searched on here for reasons and maybe a quick fix....Ultimately i took it to a transmission shop because nothing was working.... Come to find out it was the forks that were the problem...most models u can change out which ever is going bad, however my 05- 6spd manuel model tj was made all as one. Which cost more but it was worth it..and not as bad as i thought price wise...$400 for labor, less than $200 for part and took about 6 hours to fix... thats what fixed the prob for me! Hope this helps...

I have an '06 TJ and I stick it into 4th gear before going into reverse and it works like a charm. I use to put it into 1st then reverse but that only worked about 50% of the time.

I have a similar problem when shifting into second and sometimes third. I can feel the teeth and notchyness. A temporary solution I have come up with was double clutching out of first into second to make it smooth however I feel like there may be an underlying problem :(

Any suggestions? I have changed fluid with royal purple syncromesh to no help.

I just put it into neutral and double pump the clutch and it doesn't grind for me when i put it in reverse

2nd gear was grinding really bad for me. i tore the inner shift boot cover where 2nd gear is and it shifts fine now
