Lift Shackles

Looking for recommendations on 1/2 to 3/4 inch lift shackles for my front leafs on my 89 YJ with a RC 4" lift. Reasoning is there is only a 2" space between the leafs and the bump stops.

remove the bump stops thats a free mod to get you some up travel.

JeepPadre 04-27-2011 06:52 AM

Did this, then saw diff housing touch oil pan, put them Back on!

4Jeepn 04-27-2011 07:53 AM

so are you not getting enough flex? Have you removed the f/r track bars?

JeepPadre 04-27-2011 08:08 AM

Nothing wrong with springs, was just noticing when looking one day when Jeep was not loaded, there was only 2" gap between the leafs & the bump stops. When running down the beach, you at times hit those FUN bumps & figured another inch would be great! Especially when adding a loaded ice chest & fishing gear on a hitch rack.

JeepPadre 04-27-2011 08:08 AM

And yes, all track bars have been removed!

JeepPadre 04-30-2011 05:18 PM

Also, how will this affect the ride, will it stiffen up the springs or affect steering?

Hey bud I got a set of 1.5 inch lift shackles for $65 for all 4 if you want em...

I took em off my YJ when I put my 4 inch lift on.

JeepPadre 05-05-2011 10:37 PM

Thinking 1.5 is too much, but thanks anyways.

Just put these on my 89 YJ Sahara to replace the stock shackles. Roxolid Trail Armor told me that they will give you about 3/4" - 1".

I am new to the jeep community, but they were recommended by a friend who has built and drives a couple of crawlers.

Best thing about these shackles are they are not expensive, and they are beefy.

im interested if you still have them availble

the track bars wont affect anything on a negative scale..i took both of mine out (the rear went first as i swapped a ford 8.8 rear axle and there was no mount for it, then took the front out since i went spring over axle)

you have a few options, you can either a. cut down the bump stops so you still have that safety of bottoming out but you have more travel..
b. as you said shackle lift..there are tons of shackles out there. welded, solid, boomerang.. im not gonna explain all the differences look them up and you will see..
c. do both! lol

Ok, I just went and measured mine and you must have something seriously out of whack because I have only 2 5/8ths lift with settled springs and I have 4" of clearance between the axle and bumpstop in the front and 4 3/4s in the back. You sure you have a 4" lift? Or do you have extended bumpstops by chance?

That's what I was thinking I just put on new OEM springs with 1.5 shackles and have almost 3"s to the bump stops.

Mitchness 10-04-2011 12:16 PM

Crap, I just went back and reread your original post. The bumpstops don't contact the leaves when they compress, they contact the axles. Measure from the bottom of the bump stop to the top of the axle tube and let us know how much clearance you have.

...because if you only have 2" between the bumpstop and the leaf then you have even less clearance between the bumpstop and the axle.

After adding on the 1 1/4" shackle lift, the ride is awesome. Took her 4 wheeling down the beach with family, it was a totally different ride, very smooth (for a Jeep that is, lol) highly recommend the shackle lift!

YJman 10-10-2011 10:32 PM

What shackles did you go with? Im looking into a shackle lift soon to go with my 4" lift!

DirtyRob 10-11-2011 07:55 PM

I always wonder why shackels are so expensive. I will probably get bashed for this, but you can buy some at your local auto parts store for about $15-18 for front or rear $30-40 to do the whole truck.
I don't recommend lifting to the highest point on the front as you will get hella bump-steer.
I am running some of these on the lowest setting and got 1".
Set them where you are happy, and cut the rest off.

these shackles dont have a brace in the middle right? I might have the same ones as you that the PO installed. Right now they are on the middle setting and i feel thats too much..I was thinking of getting new shackles but might just do what you did and move to the lowest setting

what do ya'll do about the drive shafts when you have a 4'' lift and a 1'' shackle, dont you have to replace them then? I'm wondering because I need the jeep as a DD but would love some good uptravel when running 33s

Nubby55 11-13-2011 09:38 PM

don't know I run 29", 235/75/15 MTs goes where I need to go. OEM springs 1.5 shackles on front.

1fast lorinser 11-13-2011 10:20 PM

A bit of advice when your putting your new shackles on, do not tighten it until the jeep is sitting level and everything is connected and put together. If not you will be getting a pretty stiff ride and a back ache.
