Under $5,000? Right!

After reading many threads with members saying they've paid under 5k for a 97+ I'm extremely jealous! I watch all the car websites a few times a week and once a jeep is posted it sells. Some pretty jacked up TJs are being sold for nice cash down where I live. I couldn't fathom a decent TJ selling for under 5k, at least one that you can drive home and drive daily with minimal repairs. Even early 90s YJs are selling for 5k+. I do know the sales price because its not a big city when it comes to Jeeps.

My question is where are you guys and gals finding such inexpensive TJs???

I dream of finding a TJ for $3,800. So if you have one to sell I'll take another one. I need a swamp crawler.

Owen_TJ 05-01-2011 04:31 PM

Depends on where people live as well...

Where i used to live in Iowa, finding a clean TJ was close to impossible...

I bought my 1999 2.5L for 9k out the door which i'm still pleased with...had 63k on it and was in perfect shape. Luckily it was a manual otherwise i wouldnt of picked it up. But they had it listed for like 12,999 or somethin like that. It was the only clean wrangler within 150 miles.

Some of the deals people get are insane...you should check out the guy who got his tj for 300 haha

Irongrave 05-01-2011 04:33 PM

you picked the wrong time of year to hunt for a wrangler. they are 100% gold around here I see rough YJs listed for 4-5 grand cant touch most TJs for under 7. I got my YJ for $2500 and its built but it was sold from on club member to another as a trail rig

sahara13 05-01-2011 04:35 PM

No joke, there is an 02 Sahara with 90k miles on it listed for 14,500!!! I doubt it will sell for that. It has nothing but a 2 inch body lift and looks bone stock. We must have some suckers down here. (Naples, FL)

I guess if you want to sell list it down here!!!

Purchased my 01 60th anniv ed with aftermarket stereo, dual tops, rims and tires for $6.5k. Sold it 3 years later with just the soft top for $6.7k

I got my '99 Sport 4.0L TJ w/ 110 miles for $5000. I passed on a lifted Jeep up in north jersey, but spotted one on Craigslist. The guy knocked $1k off the price, helped me with a few other things, and I'm addicted to Jeep now. :punk:

It just takes patience and some skills with bargain hunting. However, you're looking at the worst time during the year. I bought mine in November.

Red00Tj 05-01-2011 04:41 PM

when i bought it it did not have the whinshield lights or the cargo net

bink98xcab 05-01-2011 05:01 PM

mine is a 97'4.0 auto-136k miles, 4"lift 35"trxxus mt tires 60-90%, drove it 150miles home. for a whopping $2300 cash plus 4 wheeler that i was offered $1700 for. i thought i got out great, altho i had to buy a new soft top and found out it had no ac what so ever( bought it in january)

sahara13 05-01-2011 05:05 PM

Time of year doesn't matter down here. Its always summer. I wonder if buying a Jeep in a northern climate in Oct Nov is the ideal time?????

04-Rubi 05-01-2011 05:08 PM

There are deals to be had, and cash is king. I got my Rubicon out the door for 12k.

Plowboy1970 05-01-2011 05:20 PM

My 97 sport 4.0 auto with both tops with 121K on it was 5K one week before Christmas. Took 6 weeks of looking to find it. I have been looking for another one, but the cheapest 4.0 I have found is 6.5K with 150K+ miles That has been the last 8+ weeks. They are picking up in price from what I have seen. Keep looking. I am.

old_blue 05-01-2011 07:51 PM

i wish i found one for 5k. mine cost $9,000 after taxes but she was well worth it

Zack93 05-01-2011 08:01 PM

I dont know,,, here in ohio (dayton) jeeps have been posted on CL for WAY more than they were worth since before OCT. (when I started looking) ..But here in the past few weeks they've gotten REALLY cheap. Ive seen 5/6 Tjs in the last week for under $3500 (no major problems, dints ect) and more than Yjs than I wave a stick at have been listed for less than $2500. I almost got a Yj for 900 bucks! But sadly all of the goods ones get sold before i can get out to see 'em! :banghead:

thecheezman 05-01-2011 08:04 PM

bought mine from my boss, ive always had my eye on it ever since i started working for him 4 years ago

its an 03, 4 banger, just under 140k, completely stock, manual, nothing wrong just a rip in the seat and some stains on the carpet(he has kids) but its no biggie bc im going to herculine it once the weather gets better....

he claims he doesnt know how long the tranny will last (new clutch), but hes had the jeep since it had 12k miles

but believe it or not, i got it for $2800. (100% srs)

he was looking to sell eventually (only $4k) and i told him lets work a deal and we did. i dont want to sound arrogant, but he pretty much said he owed me alot for all the work ive done for him off the clock, always being on time, no attitude and eager to work.

he even told me, the dealer was going to offer me $3300, but he decided to sell it to me.

Yeah I completely believe you-- Jeeps are kinda like girls you gotta let the right one come to you, but you still gotta be proactive about finding the right one.

Payed 3500 for my 97. 110k miles 4.0 5spd. Got it off my grandpa tho. Needed a fuel pump and tune up. I was pretty happy with it having a 7k kbb value

arcountryboy 05-02-2011 07:23 AM

Bought my 98 2.5L, 5 speed with 130K for 2250. Had a cracked head on it. Guy had a new cam kit, new bearing kit, and new gasket kit. I spent 250 on a new head and 4 hours overhauling it, runs like a champ.

ospreyguy 05-02-2011 08:22 AM

I traded a 2003 GMC Envoy (really nice) for mine. A friend needed a car for the wife and kids and I needed to get my jeep on. In the end I think we are both happy. Well... I'm happy and he's very, very sad but has a nice car. HAHA!!!

Unlikely to get "best" deal at a dealership. Check craigslist listings outside your area but within driving distance. Found mine on craigslist in Sept last year 100 miles away. 97 2.5L 99K miles $3500 - had been looking for 9months. Patience grasshopper :D

Armadaskier 05-02-2011 09:20 AM

All just a matter of looking around. When I bought my jk I went to atleast 5 dealerships and was searching the web for hours. But it paid off because I saved $2500 and got the upgraded wheels, power windows and locks, and a year of Sirius.
