Yj Carb Adjustment Question
Hi There,

I am new to this site and hope you can help.
I have a 90' YJ and need to adjust the carburetor due to it running rich. The Haynes Wrangler manual I have does not give any instruction except take it to the dealer cus it's tricky and it effects "other" things.

Does anyone have any hints on making this adjustment?

I have a 4.2L straight six. Stock carb.

Yes, get a Howell, fuel injection kit. Do away with the old carb. and all your carb headaches. Just a honest, humble, opinion.

i was running into the same problem as well with my 90 yj. All i ended up doing was adjusting the choke so that it opened sooner. On my weber there are three screws that hold the choke tight, it will be a black circular peice toward the passenger side of the carb, loosen these then mine rotated toward the front to make the choke open sooner. But if you go to much the jeep will start hard. i hope im clear enough if not say so or send one of those message things.

I too support the howell kit if money allows. It is a bit expensive, but worth every penny. Weber carbs are supposed to be nice too and a lot less money. The stock carb, if you haven't already guesses, is junk. It has been so long since I had mine I can't remember how to adjust them. I think most of the carb is computer controlled and has no adjustment.

Thanks for the feedback - I'll go with adjusting at the moment.
Seems I have another problem to deal with too, found lots of oil in the air filter.

You have the Carter carb with the pulse air system. Those carbs attempt to monitor the exhaust air, intake air temp, air/gs mix and adjust the carburetor for you. The pulse air system pulls air from the catalytic converter and the manifold through two tubes connected to the air cleaner assembly. It is a poor system at best and is greatly affected by altitude, type and brand of gas, and ambient temp. Quite often when the jeep is not driven for long enough distances moisture collects and condenses in the pulse air tubes and picks up oil from the engine. It will pool in the air filter housing and ruin your filter. There are a number of ways of getting better performance, but the least expensive is to change to a High Energy Ignition system and change to a different carburetor, like the Motor Craft 2100.

However, your state may not allow you that option. I suggest you check with local officials before changing anything under the hood.
