What is this empty space?

Hi guys,

I'm trying to get my tools and jumper cables out of my trunk space because I'd like to lose my instatrunk and have a place to put the 2 piece soft doors when I take them off.

I'm thinking about putting them in the space under the hood (shown in the pics), but would love to know why that space is there in the first place. Is something missing from my Jeep? It's a 2003 Sport with auto trans, if that makes any difference.

Thanks all!!

ABS pump lives there. And the battery on RHD models.

UnlimitedLJ04 05-01-2011 06:04 PM

it was for the optional flux capacitor.

but seriously, it was the ABS module on LHD models and the battery tray for RHD models.

The ABS is not that bad. Going slow it will lock the tires up. Jeep has it set that way.

Offroadtrailtools.com have one that bolts in if you are (a) too lazy or make your own or (b) not smart enough - like me.

Too bad you have to get to 88mph to use it, 'cause you know that won't happen!

"Right Hand Drive"

Popular for mail delivery vehicles or if you're an Aussie or Brit.

I took a look at those, and they seem a bit small. I'd like to store a small compressor (since I don't have on board air yet), jumper cables, a torque wrench, and some other mis sockets and such.

I'm debating removing that plate and moutning something longer/deeper in it's place. There seems to be a lot of space below it, should be put to good use :)

so what do I have here?
no ABS, i think my build sheet didn't even have ABS.

i do know that if i do have ABS that they dont work.

whats going on?

97wrangler-242 05-02-2011 06:12 PM

See if there's a wire coming out of your front wheel bearings. No wire, no abs

Mr_RPM 05-02-2011 06:15 PM

if you look at the OPs pictures the same little round thing exsists, just in a different spot, like closer to the front of the jeep.

the big black box in my pictures where the round thing connects is there instead, why do i have this box and the OP does not.

Your round thing is for cruise control. Your square box is the charcoal canister, same thing as mine that is round. I have no cruise. The OP must have the charcoal canister in another spot.

Mr_RPM 05-02-2011 06:42 PM

what is a charcoal canister? tried looking it up real fast and seems like many remove them, maybe the OPs jeep had it removed at one time.

Link fixed HERE.

It looks nice, but a bit pricey.

It is for emissions. Remove it and you will see the check engine light all the time, and have problems all the time.

Mr_RPM 05-02-2011 11:36 PM

what does it do? some type of filter for something?

$350 for 2 u-joints???? $129 for a shovel? If I paid $350 for u-joints, I better not ever need a $129 shovel!!!

The canister is part of the emission system. It's purpose is the take the gas fumes from the tank and feed them to the engine on start up.

In the newer wranglers it was moved to behind the passenger tail light, to free up space for the abs system :)
