Awesome. I've been eyeing that carrier. Did you install it yourself?

I did it was kind of a pain. The instruction manual said it would take 2 hours to install.

All together it took me probably 5 hours.

For reference I installed my JKS BL and MML together in about 4.5-5.5 hours.

Looks great and seems to work very well though, it's a high quality piece.

What did you run into issues with? I'm just wondering if I'm capable of installing this myself. Did it involve cutting into the body and stuff?

the majority of it was pretty straight forward.

1) bestop included the wrong threaded jack nuts, so i had to go to ace and purchase a couple 1/4-20 ones to work... i think bestop mistakenly put a metric size in the kit

2) i followed the instructions perfectly to drill the holes for the hinges on the right hand side... they came out to be way off... ended up having to redrill all 4 holes in the body lol, that was pretty depressing... it's fine though, the other ones are all covered up by the supplied rubber gaskets and brackets... i think i'm gonna fill them in with JB weld or something just because.

Hey, I just finished installing my Bestop Tire Carrier too. Tomorrow I'll mount the tire...wanted to take some pics first.

I had a problem with the jack nut, too. I found the thread size correct, but the supplied 1/4-20 bolts to be too short to thread into the jack nut to compress it. Fortunately I scrounged around an found a 1/4-20 bolt about 1-1/2" long an it worked perfectly to compress the jack nut. Then I was able to use the supplied 1/4-20 bolt to tighten into bracket.

I too drilled all the holes according to instructions...and then found the Upper Backing Plate didn't line up with the holes. :( The Upper Backing Plate, for those who haven't installed this carrier, is the brace for the Upper Body Hinge and is mounted onto the roll cage. I figured I'd probably have to re-drill the holes, too. A body shop friend of mine looked at it and said he'd just tilt the backing plate down to toward the holes in the body, get the body hinge, gasket, and bolts started into the backing plate, tighten them up and then tighten the roll cage bolts down. I doubted...and I was wrong! After staring at the mis-aligned holes (my upper hinge holes in the body were maybe 3/16" too low) for a while, I decided, screw it, and just started putting the Upper Backing Plate, Upper Body Hinge, gasket, and bolts together and tightened everything down. Darned if it didn't work!! :) My friend said the corners of the TJ are incredibly strong. I understand that now.

BTW, the supplied gasket for the Upper Body Hinge was the wrong size and the holes didn't line up. I cut the third-light gasket down to fit the hinge and punched two holes in it to match the hinge. :) I wasn't planning on re-mounting the third brake light anyway.

Now I just need to work out the adjustment/alignment and fit of the door. Uf20wop, how did your tailgate align? Looks like mine is pushing out a bit at the top. I will have to work on that tomorrow.

On a side note...have I mentioned lately how much I hate torx bolts? I managed to strip the heads of both roll cage T-50 bolts. I have found the easiest way to remove bolts like this is with an air hammer and chisel. Actually my body shop friend did this for me. Had them loose in about 5-10 seconds. That is how we also removed a stubborn windshield hinge bolt. Craftsman has a nice air hammer for $34. Think that will be my next tool purchase!!

I'm very happy with the quality and finish of my carrier. I'm all for buying American when possible, but I'm not willing to pay a huge premium for Amercan Made either unless there's noticeable quality gains. As far as tire carriers go, I looked at Bestop, OR-Fab and a few bumper mount carriers. OR-Fab looked very nice and i know a lot of Jeepers like them but for me, I wanted something that worked WITH my tailgate.

Not so sure Smittybilt is made in USA, either. Heck, if we only use made in USA stuff...guess I'll be walking from now on. Barefoot. And naked...

Your best video yet! I now look forward to watching the installation trailer for the Supertop NX (don't worry you have lots of time to produce one before my STNX gets imported) That was a good video I almost wanted to watch it again this time with a tub of :popcorn: in my hand

my tailgate seems pretty well aligned... i had to adjust the screw a little bit to suck the carrier arm against the top bumper but that was it.
