4.10's or 4.56's for 33's???

OK, I got my 3" Zone Lift installed (awesome!) and my 33" Mickey Thompson Baja MTX (even awesomer!) installed.

It has come to my attention that I have 3.07 gears. I'm not one of these sheep that thinks that just because the guys on the forum say I need different gears that I should get them but the 3.07's are just too low, or high, or whatever.

I'm assuming that 3.73's would just take me back to stock so I think I want 4.10's. But many people say that I should get 4.56's. I DO NOT want to be running at 3k RPM's @ 70mph the whole way to work so I don't think that I want 4.56's. Also when I offroad I am almost always in 4 Low.

What say you?

Hendog 05-03-2011 12:50 AM

PS, I know that "awesomer" is not a word. Just trying to be funny...

SilverTJMike 05-03-2011 01:06 AM

4.56' i get 3000 rpm but i have 33's and 4.88's but I can haul ass up I-70 so its worth it, maybe 35's next year. I also have a 6 speed manual. 4.10's and 33's not so great but better than 33's and 3.73's which is what I had.

Checkout grimjeeper.com and put in your values, it will show the rpm's and at what speed.

Do you have an auto or a stick? I asked Jerry the same question and he said 4.10 for the auto and 4.56 if you have a stick.

Ratdaddy 05-03-2011 01:23 AM

Same here, 4:10 with auto and 33s

Hendog 05-03-2011 01:50 AM

I have a stick...

Go with 4.56s you will love it . and if you ever want 35s you will still be fine. :wavey:

Hendog 05-03-2011 09:52 AM

I'm so torn because my techs are telling me 4.10's and all of you forumites are telling me 4.56's.

Who do these Techs work for?

nick50471 05-03-2011 10:12 AM

I have a 97 Sport 4.0L w/ manual transmission 33" tires and 4.56 gears. I run 2500 RPM@ 65 mph.

This is a perfect set up for getting your Wrangler back into the correct rpm range for the 4.0L.

Not intending to highjack this thread, but I have the same setup as Hendog. Do you only need to swap out the gears or do you need to change out carriers to? I am assuming that Hendog has the D30/D35 also?

dbbd1 05-03-2011 10:31 AM

If you have 3.07, I think you will need to swap out the carrier too. 3.73, no. Go see Dave at Rob's Offroad out in Clackamas.

yes you will need to change carriers.

Oregonwolf 05-03-2011 10:39 AM

Thanks for the Information

Hendog 05-03-2011 10:59 AM

I can't find the "carriers" on the Quadratec website. I think I found the gears but not that.

You can pick them up at a junkyard for $100.

Are you planning on doing this yourself?

Changing gears is not a job most can do.

Most "techs" give the same ratio recommendations whether it's a truck, Jeep, 4/6/8 cylinder engine, 4/5/6 speed manual transmission, 3-speed/4-speed automatic. They don't know/understand all the nuances of how engine sizes and transmission types affect what ratio should be installed for all the various types of vehicles they work on.

Where Jeeps are concerned, we are the experts. For your 4.0L engine, 5-speed, and 33" tires, go with 4.56.

I made the same mistake 12-14 years ago you are trying to do by listening to those tech who are recommending 4.10 for your 33" tires. Within several days of installing the 4.10 gears, I knew I had made a mistake by ignoring my friend's recommenations for 4.56 and instead going with 4.10 because I was afraid the rpms would be too high with 4.56. Big mistake.

I have an auto transmission and I am running 33" tires. When I re-geared, I chose the 4.10 ratio, it is spot on (get on the freeway and off-road) for me and I daily drive my Jeep.

Yep, 4.10 is the perfect ratio for the 4.0L engine and 33" tires when you have the 3-speed automatic. It's when the 5-speed manual transmission is installed, which has an overdrive ratio for its top gear, where 4.56 is the appropriate ratio. :)

Oops, in my haste - didn't see the OP had a 5-speed manual (guilty of not reading the whole thread). Yup, JB's on the money with the 4.56 ratio :).

Thanks guys...

I too have the 4.0 5-spd 33's 4.56 love this set uphttp://www.wranglerforum.com/images/smilies/dance.gif

I've got 4.88s on my YJ with 5 speed, 4.0 and 33s. It's perfect off and on road. I'm running 5.13s on my '03 Rubi with a manual tranny and 35s. It's good but "feels" a little lower than the YJ.

You can get carriers for about 70 $ from East Coast Gears.:thumb:
