Painted Coil Springs?

Anyone ever paint their coil springs? If so, how did it turn out and how did the paint last? It was just one of those random thoughts I had driving today. Saw another Jeep and looked at the coils and thought, man that would be kind of neat if they were painted.. I don't know. Just a thought. Could be a dumb idea, but maybe not! What's everyone think?

I painted all 4 of my Rubicon Express springs on my ZJ while they were on the Jeep. They were rusty looking so I used a can (not spray paint) of grey rustoleum, a foam brush and a small touch-up brush. It took forever and was a bit of a pain but they turned out looking great. BTW, the grey paint was almost an exact color match to the RE springs. I guess it would be a lot more work to do a different color but it has held up well after 2 years.

cool. yea I really have no intentions of doing it. but the thought had crossed my mind since I have a lift kit on the way. Like I said just a thought. thought it might be one of those little things that make it look cool!

I was tempted to paint the springs on my LJ the same color as the Jeep before I installed them but I didn't go through with it. I still think it would have been unique and looked different.

Yea I was thinking the same thing. Well I know I have some time to think it over. Maybe I'll go find an old spring somewhere and mess around a bit

I AM going to be painting the frame black and my springs red soon, when I get time off of school to do so. I'm thinking something that will last with primer base coat.
Possibly first put some POR-15 on it then cover it

I just got my rear springs used and they are scratched and beat up, tomorrow I am painting them I'll post a picture to show how they came out.

I know this is an old thread and the chances are kinda slim...but do any of you have pictures of your springs painted? I'd be interested in seeing them because I have a lift kit on the way and am considering painting them myself.

Be a lot easier to pant them before they are installed, Don't know how well it will hold up though.

Painted mine before I put them in about two years ago with color matched spray paint from Duplicolor.... still look just fine and the have been flexed, covered in mud and pressure washed.

UnlimitedLJ04 07-01-2014 04:27 PM

keep in mind you will scratch the heck out of the springs in the process of removing/installing them...

Dragonii 07-01-2014 05:55 PM

Not necessarily. We only scratched mine on the bottom where they sit on the axle and I have 4" longer than stock.
Flex the axles right so they are low enough and remove the bump stops, then it's just a matter of prying up with a crow bar on the bottom of the spring and having a buddy with tennis shoes kick it in place.
The back ones just fall in and out.
