Leaking Brake Fluid - Newbie Needs Help
 
I haven't had my used '98 for more than two weeks and today the brake pedal went soft and the warning light went on in the dash cluster. I am hoping it is just a hose but if someone could talk me through some investigative steps I would appreciate it.

I just want to know if it is something I can fix myself or if I will have to shell out for service. I am no mechanic but I am also not a moron so I figure I can handle beginner to moderate repairs.

Have you looked at the inside of your lower tire sidewalls for evidence of leaking brake fluid dripping down from the brake systems above? Have you looked anywhere at all yet, like under the master brake cylinder to see if you can spot what is leaking if you don't see it on the inside sidewalls?

I can see it dripping to the ground from the frame. I have no idea where to look from there. It sounds like the dealer will be fixing it but I see this as a chance to learn a little something too.

Dont take it to the dealer just yet. Brakes are usually an easy fix depending on location. If you can find someone to step on the brake, turn the wheel to one side so you can stick your head under the front wheels. Listen/look for a leak when the other person is stepping on the brakes. If you can post some pictures of the leak, it will be easier for us to help out as well.

The dripping is your map to the leak. Crawl under the Jeep with a flashlight. Look straight up from where the drip is. Sounds like you had a line let go. Maybe rusted through.

If so you'll need to replace the entire line from one end to the other, or if you have a flare tool, you can cut out the bad section and splice in a new section with fittings. NOT COMPRESSION FITTINGS!
