Tire rubbing? '95 YJ Sahara Stock Wheels
He guys and gals,

A while back I put 31x10.5 R15 tires on my stock 5 spoke alloys. My Jeep and suspension are all stock. At near full wheel turns the tires rub on a bracket that goes around the front leaf springs. I am trying to figure out what the best solution to this problem may be?

1) Keep stock wheels and add wheel spacers? I have heard that using wheel spacers is not a good idea, but not certain why, safety? reliability? handling?...? I'd like to hear from those of you running wheel spacers and what your opinion is as well as any first hand observations from others? If they are working from some of you, what Brand seems to be the best?

2) Trash the stock wheels and invest in new wheels with smaller backspacing? I read that the stock wheels (not certain which stock wheels? Mine are the 5 spoke aluminum Sahara wheels) have a 5.5" backspacing. If I understand all the offset and backspacing stuff correctly, if I go to a wheel with 3.75" of backspacing for example, that would push the tires out from the undercarriage 1.75" on each side which should be more than enough clearance. I am guessing that if the tires were 3/4" further out, they would not rub. Although I am not a big fan of the stock wheels, in my price range I have not seen many options in 15x8 I like a lot better. Is 15x8 the only wheel that will fit a stock Jeep?

3) Live with the problem and go with tires that are not as wide next time? Anyone know what size that would be?

As long as you got a spacer ring and you still have enough lug left to get the rims fully secured the spacers are not a bad deal. I run 31x 10.5 on my 88 YJ with no rubbing and my son runs 31x10.5 on the 87 Cherokee I gave him with no problem either. Not sure why you would be rubbing the strap on your leaf springs unless you are really cranking it into a turn and holding it there (like doing donuts).

Plan two, is the best. Just get wheels with 3.75" back spacing.

Just to be clear..the only time the tires rub on the springs is when I am cranking the ful left or right. This Jeep is my daily driver and so getting in and out of parking spaces is the obvious time when everyone around looks over wondering what that sound is when the tire lugs grind on the leaf spring clip! Since I couldn't see putting spacers on the front and not the back, it looks like $200 for a quality front and rear set which is half way there for a set of cheap wheels. If I ran 30x9.50 R15 instead of 31X10.5 R15 would that solve it? Not certain of tire sizes but if the 9.5 is an inch narrower than the 10.5 that would be all the clearance I need. The 31 inch is fine, but they don't seem to make a 31X9.5 R15.

look on the spindle for your tire.There is a small bolt slicking out. If you unscrew that out further it will stop your tire from turning so sharp.You will have a bit less turning radius but dont have to worry about the tires rubbing. But hell...a jeep can turn on a biggie if you have to turn like a regulare vehicle :)

If you still have you stock rubber break lines keep an eye on those also.

I have a tj and went to 31 10.5 with 1.25 spacers
I have a tj and went to 31 10.5 with 1.25 spacers and i have to say the spacers are horrible, they simply do not stay tight... I have to do something because without the spacers i am rubbing against the uh i guess sway arm at the rear of the tire... i don't see where a lift would solve the problem as it would move the arm further up the tire and in my case that would put it directly in the middle of the radius of the tire, compounding the problem...

I am currently trying to figureout wheels that will allow me to move out about and inch without the spacers... as for the 30 9.5, well that was the factory size on my tj... and it was just fine....

just get new wheels.. all yjs have this prob.. new wheenls look way better and will end up costing about as much as spacers.. plus new steel wheels will be stronger- def the way to do-- get wheels, obviously with enough back spacing- call 4wheel parts they will help you
