Painted My Fender Flares

I have been researching how to paint my fender flares since buying my Jeep in December and have been waiting for the weather to cooperate. On sunday I had the time, the weather was cooperating so I decided to dive in.

I went to Wal-Mart and purchased the following supplies.

1 Can Krylon Fusion Satin Black Paint for Plastic
1 Roll of 1" Blue Painters Tape
1 Roll of 2" Blue Painters Tape
1 Bottle of Rubbing Alcohol
1 150 Grit Sandpaper Sponge

Fist i sanded the fenders with the sponge and rubbing alcohol. After they dried i wiped them with a wet papertowel and then again with a dry paper towel. They looked similar to before the cleaning, very faded.

Then i began taping off the fenders with the 1" tape to start, then went back and used the 2" so i could cover more space quickly. After completing the project I could have gotten away with just using the 1 roll of 2" tape. Once it was taped off I painted the first coat. It was a little windy outside which made it a little more difficult, but I managed to keep the paint where I wanted it.

Then I let the paint sit for 15 minutes and applied another coat. I was worried about the paint puddling so I went inside had a budweiser and relaxed for about 45 minutes before going back outside to apply 3 more coats. After applying the 5th coat (I used the whole can of paint) I let the paint dry for 45 more minutes and enjoyed another budweiser becauase it is Sunday Funday after all. Then I went back outside to remove the tape and see how it came out. I was very happy with the way it looks aside from a few spots where the tape covered tiny parts of the fender flares, which i plan on going over with a black paint pen when the rain stops. its not something that stands out too badly, but I notice it and thats reason enough to touch it up. Here are some pictures of the finished product. Let me know what you think.

Next project will be to paint the mirrors and the milk jugs, but once I take them off I may just leave them off.

Nice! You had me scared there for a bit when you said you went to Wally World.

I once saw a guy paint his entire Ranger in a WW parking lot. Their top lot sat across from our body shop. The guy parked there, went in and came back with two cases of flat black spray bombs. And proceeded to spray the truck. No wipe down, no tape.
Least it was black vs the multi color is showed up with, when he left.





Only suggestion or tip if you will, pop the light out when you paint the front flares.
One nut and remove the lamp socket.

What happens if you don't is you leave an edge of paint around the lamp, this can lead to the edge lifting. Folowed by the paint peeling on you.

Thats a good point about popping out the lights, I was just being lazy. I plan on using VH Night Shade to coat the two signal lights when I get some more free time as I like the way it had come out for other forum members.

Everyone seems to hate the milk jugs, I will prob paint them and then decide if I want to put them back on or not.

Spend the extra and buy tinted markers from ebay.... They look better and aren't as dark as you'll end up going with nightshades to hide the amber..... tinting the tails with nightshades is cool especially if you tint the inside of the lens rather than the outside. JMO of course... :)

Interesting idea with the nightshades on the inside of the tail lights, I was wondering how people managed to tint them as they are textured. I will have to look into buying the smoked signal lights on ebay as long as they aren't to much more than the supplies.

The Milk Jugs are the faded plastic pieces at the end of the bumpers on both the front and the back and look very similar to a gallon milk jug that has been painted.

They are more, about $55 as I recall, but you get amber bulbs and they just look much cleaner, IMO. The texture from the spray plus the amount of spray needed to cover the amber lenses just doesn't look professional in my opinion. Of course, it's your Jeep, and you can do what you like with it.. :)

Tails tinted w/Nightshades. I didn't want these black, just wanted to blend with my paint color.... I didn't tint the side reflectors in the back. Only the lenses, and taped off the clear back up lights.

Do the tail-lights still reflect light when you shine a flashlight on them from behind?

Before doing any prep work clean with soap and water then wipe down with a good wax remover. If you dont the sanding will embed wax particles into the plastic.

If you want to paint body color make sure you use the right color primer. Most lighter colors use a white primer, if you use a gray or black primer when white is called for the topcoat will be to dark.

Piece of cake, took about 15 minutes. Took longer to unscrew them and tape off the back up light than anything. :)

Sure they do, they are just a little darker than stock really. They look darker in this pic than they really are.

^^^ I will have to give that a try. Once you got the tail lights off did you have to do anything other than tape off the clear part of the backup lights?

Also I am thinking of painting the plastic piece that says jeep right behind the front bumper along with the two plastic pieces on the front bumber on either side of the license plate to match the fenders. My concern is that the metal bumper will then look faded, but i suppose that i could just paint that as well, what do you think?

Did the 150 grit work for you ok?

Mine have been painted before but this time I'm going to take my time and prep.

I have a lot of road crap and pits from tire spray. I'm thinking I might want to go more course but don't want to scratch the plastic either.

It's only been 3 days since I painted them, but it seemed to work well. The rubbing alcohol destroyed the sponge once I was finished, but it seemed to give it enough of a texture for the paint to bind, but only time will tell. It is my DD so it doesnt get to many rocks or dirt flung at it. The true test will be in August when I get over to the Vineyard as the road to our beach is a few miles long and very narrow so you constantly are scraping the brush on both sides.

On Saturday I spent the day detailing the interior and was pleased to find there was little to no rust on the tub when i pulled up the carpet to vaccuum underneath. Then I decided to paint the milk jugs to match the fender flares. Is it possible to paint the metal bumpers? I imagine you can just use a spraypaint designed for metal and go through the same process i have for the flares / milk jugs. If anyone has done this i would love some feedback on what worked and what didnt.

I painted my flares a few years ago, seemed to keep cracking,(kids using them as a step ladder to get in the back) so last year I used rustolium truck bed liner. it worked great and looked even better

I'm just asking because I'm a newby Wrangler owner, but is it hard just unbolting the fender flares and cleaning and painting them while their off? I was looking under there the other day and it looks like there's just some bolts holding the fenders onto the steel fender extension. I'm not stirring your cage buddy, just asking because I was thinking of painting mine. I didn't know how hard it was to take them off or if your were asking for trouble by doing that on an older Jeep.

good question, I decided to leave them on as it is a 98 and i read other threads where some people had issues sometimes in getting them off and or back on. I didnt even bother to try and take them off as it is my DD and if i had trouble getting them back on i would be in trouble. I imagine they would last longer and look better if you take them off and paint them, but so far they are holding up nicely.

Hinges, Body Armor, Flares, Roll Bar, Bumpers, and Interior are Rust-oleum Truck Bed coating, just taped off, hit them with scotch brite, primed the Diamond Plate and sprayed the rest 3 coats on the exterior 4 on the inside of the tub.

^^^ Looks Good, I do plan on painting my bumper as it now looks faded compaired to the fenders & milk jugs. maybe i will spray a bed liner on it, instead of spray paint designed for metal. did you prime the bumpers??? if you dont mind giving me the step by step for them i'd appreciate it.

Sure you can paint the bumper with paint or go the liner route. The older jeeps had a flat coating, of shiny paint. The later ones went to a textured finish, and more of a semi flat paint.

To do it right you need to take it off. Remove all the hooks/jugs/etc. Wipe down with wax/grease remover/ bug and tar remover/ denatured alcohol/ paint reducer. Scuff it with something like 320 grit paper. Wipe it down again. Look for the big chips and sand em out to flow the chip area into the good part so it's not so obvious. If need be, prime and sand em. Wipe again. Paint.

While the paint is drying, or between coats, work on the hooks/bolts and shoot them too. Reinstall it all, touch up any mars you made on the bolts/nuts reinstalling them.
