Understanding Jeep classifications - TJ/JK/etc

I'm 100% new to Jeeps. So, I want to make sure I'm understanding these classifications right:

Are the sub-class, TJ, JK, etc, related purely to the year of the wrangler? So, my new jeep, 2005 Wrangler X, would be a Wrangler X TJ?

These forums are the only place I really found the classifications defined, and it's merely in a sub-forum description box. So, I wanted to make sure I understand it right.

Thanks.

Yes, the CJ, YJ, TJ, JK designations pertain to the years they were built. And yes your '05 is a TJ. Each designation change occurred with a change in the body style, etc.

daggo66 05-24-2011 12:40 PM

CJ was an actual model designation. The rest are factory designations.

billytheyj 05-24-2011 02:27 PM

Cj was first designated for civilian jeep. After that it became a wrangler with the yj tj and jk for model year designations. Or...

Crusty jeep
Yomper jeep
Uhhhhh turd jeep?
Just kidding

^^^^ all in good fun. No offense meant to anyone!

darkproximity 05-24-2011 02:31 PM

you might also encounter LJ and JKU

LJ is dubbed by jeepers as "Long Jeep", its basically a TJ with a longer wheelbase, and longer tub. Its not dubbed as such from the factory though.. It's the TJ Unlimited

JKU Is the JK Unlimited, or the 4 door JK.

Hello,
Sorry if I'm necroing this thread, but I'm new too, and I was refered here from another thread, yet I didn't see my awnser.

The other day, I saw a Jeep labled "Unlimited" yet it was only a 2 door. It did look a little longer then the non unlimited (Limited?) But it confsed me.
So whats going on?
Thanks
-Jonathan

It could be a Rubicon Sahara or an LJ unlimited. Those are the two I noticed that have been produced more recently. Read XJ Knight's two posts and look for the unlimited models...
