Transmission noise

Never owned a Wrangler before, but love it. Know they are not the quietest vehicle to ride in, but how much noise is reasonable to expect from the manual transmission? Bought '04 from local dealer, with warranty, that has developed noise from trans. Noisy at idle, put your foot on the clutch and noise goes away. Have owned many vehicles with manual trans. and to me it sound classic input shaft bearing. Dealer say no, it's gear noise. How noisy is the TJ trans?

Your throw out bearing is going out, not a biggie as far as cost but you'll need to drop the tranny to replace it, That is the bearing that disengages the clutch from the flywheel so you can shift gears, when you press the clutch it puts pressure on the bearing and quiets it down temporarily. You will need to get it done pretty soon because once it starts to get loud it is close to failing, when that happens you will not be able to disengage the clutch.
