Miller Jeep Trail - June 11th/12th and camping

Just called the Mt. Pinos Ranger station they said Miller Jeep trail is scheduled to open this weekend!!

So how about doing to trail the weekend of June 11th?

I will be camping, camping can be optional.

(I just copied Armands info from out last run and changed it a bit)
http://www.wranglerforum.com/f55/mil...0-a-65451.html

Miller Jeep Trail is rated difficult, but is really moderate for a Jeep. For comparison it's not much more difficult than Last Chance Canyon or Cleghorn, which some of us recently hit. For this trail run, everyone's Jeep needs to have tow points both front and rear. A CB radio is also highly recommended to be able to communicate with the group on the trail. Please bring a bundle of firewood, plenty of water (I recommend at least a gallon per person per day), provisions and food for overnight camping, and a party attitude!

So here's the plan:

Saturday 6/11/11
Pack a lunch to eat on the trail.

8:00am Gas up and meet at Flying J's
42810 Frazier Mountain Rd
Lebec, CA 93243
661-248-2505

8:30am go to Big Johns Mountain Grill for breakfast
(I think I ate here a long time ago when i used to ride motorcycles through here - good breakfast i remember)
3121 Mount Pinos Way
Frazier Park, CA 93225

9:50am We should reach the trailhead about this time.
N34 45.578 W119 02.987

10:00am Air down and disconnect at the Staging area.
N34 44.059 W119 02.364

We'll immediately hit the first obstacle, called the Gate Keeper, which is pretty representative what's more to come, hence its name. If you can't get past the Gate Keeper, you shouldn't be on the trail. (Don't let that statement scare you. Everyone should be fine.)

Break for lunch along the trail at Sunset Camp
N34 41.998 W119 00.023

3:00pm Arrive at the end of the trail at the campgrounds in the moutains - (I think we need a camping permit) Or drive out to Hungary Valley and hop on the 5 home. Its about 30-45 minutes from the trail end.

Sunday

We'll have breakfast then break camp, play around on the obstacle courses in 4WD Practice Area at Hungry Valley, maybe hit short trail or two at Hungry Valley if anybody still hasn't gotten enough wheeling by then, then air up and head home.

So post up if you want in!

Going:
1. Beantown - camping
2. Rebuilt - camping
3. Yomondo - camping
4. estim8d - camping
5. Six Gun Matt - day trip

Maybee
1.
2. Krawson - camping
3. mJUSTINm - camping

I would probably do this, but Ive got stuff going on BOTH of those weekends haha...oh well at least one of those weekends is already a jeep trip :punk:

Have fun guys!

yomondo 05-25-2011 11:21 AM

Can't wait to get back on Miller Jeep Trail, but I'm on-call both those weekends, so not available.

Anyway, the campsite at the end of Miller Jeep Trail is called Dutchman Camp, and it's at N34 40.557 W118 58.696. That was a nice campsite. This is in the Los Padres NF, so technically you do need an adventure pass to camp overnight there, although when we were there last December, none of us had adventure passes (because we weren't planning on camping there), and the rangers that stopped by and talked with us didn't bother checking.

Here's the GPS track from when we went last year on 12/4-12/5.
12/4/10-12/5/10 Miller Jeep Trail / Hungry Valley

Well, I'm available 6/4-6/5, but I just posted up a feeler on doing Calico that weekend.
http://www.wranglerforum.com/f55/cal...5-a-95322.html
Otherwise, after that I'm not available again until 7/16.

Did the ranger happen to mention how much mud is still up there on Miller Jeep Trail?

BeantownR6 05-25-2011 11:56 AM

oh ok i didn't see that. the weekend of june 4/5 would be the one i would not want to go, i am heading racing from this thursday to sunday, and after last weekend's big bear trip i need a weekend to unwind at home instead of running off on another adventure ya know. any of the other 3 weekends in june would be better, but lets see how this all plays out.

I do want to go check out Calico though one of these days.

no mention about how much mud but i will check back with them

KRawson 05-25-2011 11:59 AM

I'm usually pretty open on the weekends, ill head out and camp when we have a for sure date. I just bought a new tent so I gotta give it a test run.

mJUSTINm 05-25-2011 01:23 PM

No more 1 person tent and a pissed off GF? Ha!

I could do either weekend, but I'd prefer the 11th. If we go the 11th I could camp, if we go the 18th I can't.

Been wanting to check out this trail for a while.

Yea, she was not having it. I was fine. I could have stayed a week like that. But I ended up getting a 4 person to keep all my gear in there while wheeling. I guess the extra space will come in handy. I might try it out in a week or two in azusa and do that small hike bridge to nowhere. Its a good little hike.

BeantownR6 05-25-2011 11:03 PM

well i won't be able to go the first weekend anyways for other reasons.

Lets plan for the weekend of the 11th. ill update the first post as soon as the mod lets me. do any of you guys have a GPS? i have my android i am just learning how to use it with yomondos help and his gps track

BeantownR6 05-26-2011 12:02 AM

info updated!

mJUSTINm 05-26-2011 12:34 PM

I have one, but I've never downloaded tracks onto it. Time to learn!

BeantownR6 05-26-2011 04:02 PM

i think what i am using will be fine. but if you can get yours to work as a back up that would be good. there are a few turns and ive been on the trail once and don't remember. i dowloaded the track and got it pulled up on my androind and had to install the backcountry app, it works.

Rebuilt 05-26-2011 04:32 PM

I remember that way and to the camp site. my gps recorded the trail direction we went in. I'm looking to get in on this trail. Just gotta get my front gears changed and im ready to go!

not that i know of? but MJT is supposed to be open.

Rebuilt 05-26-2011 06:44 PM

Ok I lost track alot of new posts. Wish I was on here more to keep myself up to date

Xjman1 05-26-2011 10:52 PM

Club just cleared a bunch of trees up there 2 weeks ago. I have not been on this trail in years but can say I hear it got easier and have taken up a LOWERED TJ(not mine) with spotting as well as many stock XJ's and a stock IFS Nissan Pathfinder. Take your time, disconnect front swaybars, air down and pick lines carefully.
I am not sure of plans that weekend, but if I have nothing going on I will try to make it.

yomondo 05-30-2011 12:40 AM

Put me down as a "maybe" for a day trip. It depends on what's going on at work that weekend, since I'll be on-call and will basically be taking a chance that there will be no call while I'm out.

Rebuilt 05-30-2011 06:47 PM

So it's on the 11th as of right now?

BeantownR6 05-31-2011 08:11 AM

ya 11th + 12th

CALIJK 06-02-2011 05:19 PM

Hey Beantown, I wish I could make this run, but my son's graduation is the 11th. I'll be watching this forum now also for future runs. Thanks.

yomondo 06-02-2011 07:33 PM

Hey Dave! Welcome! Good to see you here too. There are some great people here to wheel with, just like on JKF.

KRawson 06-02-2011 07:40 PM

Gotta switch out my ball joints, if I do it before the 11th ill be heading out with you guys.

mJUSTINm 06-03-2011 03:52 AM

Not entirely sure if I can make it now. My transmission is giving me trouble, and I've got a squeak/clunk in the front end that I need to take care of before a big trip later this month. I'll check in again later.
