Should I sell my hardtop??

Alright...I've been going back and forth about selling my hardtop for a soft top about a million times.

The reason i've been back and forth about this is because I don't have a standard 1 piece hardtop like most TJ's but instead have a 2 piece. I'm able to take the front portion off (which covers the front seats) and store it on the roof rack (clicks into place) so I can kinda have the top off without taking the entire thing off...then if it starts to rain I can just put the front half on and its all good.

Well, I finally posted the top for sale locally and have had some heavy interest for it at 1,200.

If I were to sell the hardtop I'd get a Trektop NX but I'm torn...

Right now, here are the positives I see with selling the 2 piece top for the NX...

1. NX is way lighter which could help with 1st/2nd gear acceleration...not by a ton but still.

2. Could take the top fully off whenever I wanted

3. I'd have an extra 650 left over after selling the hardtop (300 of which i'm going to give my parents as a gift)

4. With the 350 i'd have left after buying the new NX top and giving my parents 300...i'd have enough left over to get a new flex-a-lite electric fan

As for the positives to keep the hardtop

1. Its more quiet than the soft top

2. Warmer in the winter (never turned my heater above setting 1 last winter)

3. Glass windows...much easier to scrape

4. More secure since you cant just punch a hole through and get into the cab

5. I think a hardtop looks cleaner than a soft top

So...

opinions anyone???

Heres some pics of how it looks on and half off

I wouldnt.... IMHO or if you do wait until winter and get more $

Austin Williams 05-28-2011 10:15 PM

Want my opinion? I'd hold on to it. I have a feeling you're going to regret it come winter time if you do decide to sell it. If it were me I'd keep the hard top and save up the money for a soft top as well. Use the soft top for the summer months, and swap out the hardtop for the winter. If your winters are anything like ours, they're cold, windy and miserable. Plus our roads are salted and sanded, and that would do a number on the vinyl windows and fabric.

It's really to each their own. I know owners who run topless whenever they can, be it thru pouring rain and hail, and I know others that have had their Jeep's for years and never had the top down once. Me? I like the variety of having both. And you have a nice option of the sunroof on yours.

If you do decide to sell it you're going to have a hell of a time getting it back if you do decide for much near the price you sold it for.

Just my 2 cents. :)

Owen_TJ 05-28-2011 10:18 PM

Thats what i'm thinkin too, guys...

Plus, its kinda nice that i'm able to just take the front part off, store it, then put it back on as easy as it goes off.

I'm thinkin i'll just repaint the top to look new again (slightly faded on the roof) and just save up some money to pick up the electric fan...

Mr_RPM 05-28-2011 11:35 PM

Id save it too, for 1 thats a really cool hard top. id trade my hard top plus some money for it. i love that the front comes off.

2nd i like the security from hard tops. when theres zombies your not going to be happy with a soft top (hahaha jk)

Derek14LC 05-29-2011 12:17 AM

where would i go to get a hard top like that ive never seen that around here before. thanks guys

Owen_TJ 06-02-2011 09:06 PM

Well...as of now i'm still on the fence.

I have repainted it and it looks brand new now but still cant help but wonder if i'd like having the Trektop NX more...

wish i had the room to store the hardtop and the money to buy the soft top lol

WhiteSandsJeep 06-02-2011 09:39 PM

I would hold on to the hard top and just get a bikini top for summer. You will regret selling it.

TjTheo 06-02-2011 09:46 PM

id paint it with some krylon fusion though, sell it for 1800 in the wintertime if you still want to sell it.

Scoob 06-02-2011 09:57 PM

I wouldn't sell it. hard tops are GREAT in the winter. No worry of scraping ice off the windows.
I run a hard top from first snow to first week in the 70's. The rest of the time I run a safari. I am going to go with the rampage and sell my soft top and safari top. But no way would I go without a hard top.

6InARowMakesItGo 06-02-2011 10:12 PM

i dont usually drive my wrangler in the winter but i have before. to scrape the rear windows all i did was wipe it with my hand. ice doesn't stick on it like it does glass. i still wouldn't sell the hard top though. save up for a safari top for the summer if you want.

Already painted! Did it over the weekend...did it with 3 cans of krylon fusion: satin black. Looks brand new. I also epoxied the corners in case i miss the "hook" and drop the top (which i've done already) and it just hits the epoxy and not the top.

Sounds good to me...i think i'll just go that route then!

Thanks, man...i think thats the route i'll go. I'll just keep it and then get a bikini top or safari top

Wrangler06 06-03-2011 12:00 AM

i loveeeeee targe tops..ill trade you my regular hard top? :D :D :D hahaha

Atthehop 06-03-2011 07:59 AM

There is nothing more relaxing then no top and hard tops are such a pain to take off I ordered my TJ w/o one and never regreted it.

Mortalis5509 06-03-2011 04:45 PM

There was a thread on JF about fans and it's burried somewhere. The reponces were the stock fan is more than adequate and you would be wasting your money. Actually that fan would not do as well as your stock fan. Jeep isn't going to manufator something without it keep cool. As long as your jeep stays at 210 spend your money on better things. If it doesn't then there is a problem other than your fan.

Owen_TJ 06-03-2011 06:02 PM

I agree the stock fan is more than adequate in cooling the motor...

the reason for me getting the electric fan would be to free up engine space, free up engine power since the stock fan is mechanical, and slightly increase my mpg (not a concern, just a bonus).

Pretty funny its all about where you are located. The same reasons why you say, "no way would I go without a hard top" are the same reasons that helped me make up my mind and say no way would I own one. In Texas I drive top down most, not all, of the winter since the days are wonderfully warm and sunny. Trying to take a hard top on and off and storing it a bunch of times is way too much work. Down here a soft top, or safari, lets you just drop it and enjoy.

Owen_TJ 06-03-2011 09:42 PM

I'm in Denver lol...

I don't think that a justifyed return at all. I don't think you will gain MPG. That's like saying if I add a KN FIPK i will get better MPG. I rather my engine stay cool and take that money and save up for a regear which would improve your fuel economey.

Owen_TJ 06-03-2011 11:43 PM

http://www.wranglerforum.com/f5/elec...ion-53783.html

I think an electric fan will benefit a 2.5L more than it would a 4.0 and in the link above, are actual results posted by one of the members on his 2.5L

As for the staying cool, i'm sure the electric fan would be just as adequate in cooling the motor as the stock mechanical fan...and from every thread i've read, it does.

The power gain is what i'm mainly looking for. I dont care about mpg, i was just mentioning that as a bonus and with freeing up the power used for the fan on the 2.5, there will be a noticeable gain which would be worth the 350.

As for the regear, that i'm also going to be doing. I'm going to regear to 4.56 down the road here...just gotta do a few other things first (non jeep related)

Reno_wrangler 06-03-2011 11:50 PM

Man this is more than ironic..my RED 06 and I have the hardtop being offered 1200 for it also and not sure what to do..as for quieter...I have been in sailcloth tops quieter than the hards...also security wise..If they want in..they will get in...an alarm is 100.00 and well worth it. Still I can't decide if I should sell or not....To go wheeling here in NV you need to be covered or death by dust happens so a bikini top is out.

I think the only power you will gain will be frmo your butt dyno. If you want more power than a 6 or 8 will do.

Owen_TJ 06-05-2011 03:47 AM

I still dont see how you have a vaild argument...

a 2.5L engine has less power than a 4.0 so powering the same amount of accessories would take more power away from the 2.5L motor...when freeing the power used for the mechanical fan, it would then give more power, as an overall percentage, back to the motor of the 2.5 vs the 4.0...so you would see a larger noticable gain for the 2.5, which i have, vs a 4.0.

Also, there is an obvious power gain when the motor doesnt have to work something such as a mechanical fan...it wont be just a butt dyno...

I can see an argument for a drop in kn filter or something of that nature, but when the part in question is actually taking power away from the motor to run, and is now given back to the motor, there is an obvious power gain...

RandyScatch 06-06-2011 01:16 AM

just save up some cash for the soft top, i just got the supertop nx and i love it your gonna pay alot more to get it back if you change your mind just sayin

BlackMetal 2004TJ 06-06-2011 01:38 AM

yea hold on to the hard top till at least the winter time just in case. just curious what kind of wheels do you have ?

Owen_TJ 06-06-2011 12:43 PM

Yeah, I'm keepin it now...ill get a soft top as well down the road here when I get my new place so I have more room to store the hardtop when off.

As for the wheels, they are 15x8 Mickey Thompson Limited Edition Signature Series...I've also got a set of satin gorilla lugs but haven't put them on yet.

98jeepparra 06-06-2011 01:30 PM

can u please tell me what kind of hard top is that!!!!!!!!!!!!

Neil F. 06-06-2011 02:58 PM

Looks like a Bestop (Note Bestop is not making them any more and Keystone bought the molds). There have been several other manufactuers of 2 piece tops incliding Steelhorse, Bulldawg and Rallytops.

sevenservices 06-06-2011 03:05 PM

I'd keep it... mine is so much nicer in the winter than the soft top was. Quieter to...

lovemachine 06-06-2011 04:34 PM

I sold my hardtop last summer, and never regretted it.

Of course, I didn't use the money for my Jeep. I bought this!
