'11 JK Manual Transmission

Hi Guys,

Just picked up my JK yesterday (and managed to have someone rear end me on the way home :()

Haven't driven a manual JK before but the gear box does seem pretty noisy. There is a loudish whirring noise from the transmission with the clutch engaged in all gears, esp when under load, is this normal? or should I be concerned? Would assume that the Wrangler is noisier than a normal car but don't think it should be so noticeable in the cabin. I've done less than 500Kms.

I had a gearbox in my old Mazda that made the same noises just before it exploded.

Any help would be great.

I picked up an '11 three weeks ago and the 6 speed is quiet. :whistling:

I can tell you that it is not the most smooth shifting of manual transmissions, in other words, it seems to require more concentration to engage without noise. From what I've read on the forums, it's a very robust trans seeing that it is a truck trans and not in passenger cars.

A few weeks ago I picked up a used 2009 JKU with manual. The tranny exhibits more noise, klunks, whir and ping than the one on my junky 2000 S10 pickup. I believe it is just how they are. It is a slow shifting thing but the engine takes a long time to lose RPM with the clutch in so I'm usually waiting for the RPMs to coast back down anyway before letting out the clutch.

I really wish the tranny had different gear ratios and a different pattern, but oh well.

1st, sorry to read about your mishap on the way home from picking up your new jeep. I hope that your jeep looks like new again soon if any damage came to it.

This is my second 2008 jku, both were standards and both sounded similar regarding noise from the gear box. It would be difficult for us on the forum to determine if yours is noisy as that determination is rather subjective. That being said, I would suggest to you to go back to the dealer and ask them to check it out for excessive noise. If they say that it is normal, and you still think it is loud, let them know that. Ask them to test drive a couple of standards around the block to satisfy your curiosity about your jeep an how much noise it is making. You may discover that your jeep is normal and have to adjust to it. On the other hand it may give you reason to pursue it further with the dealer. Let us know how this pans out for you. Best of luck.

No noise from my tranny. Initially shifting was a little stiff. After 3k miles it is great.

Thanks guys for all the reply's, sounds like the tranny generally noisy, but might take it to a dealer and see what they think.

Unfortunately i purchased it from a dealer about 6 hours away form home (was about $7k cheaper than i could get locally) so don't have a tame dealer handy, but I'll see if i can get some help locally.

Let you know how i get on.

Cheers
