satelite radio

Does anyone have suggestions on where to mount the magnetic antenna for my sirius radio. The instructions say to put it on the roof of the vehicle but I don't think that mwill work on my soft top. Would it be ok on the hood?

I remember a post in the forum that, I think, dolfy made about this. I can't remember who, but I remember seeing it before. I'll look and see if I can post a link to it.

Here it is.

Yep that was me. I'll be moving the antennae up onto the roll bar seeing that it will still work with no problems even though I have a hard top. I much prefer to keep these things hidden. Don't want to give anyone any ideas of breaking into the rig.

here's the factory location...

....with and without the roll-pad cover. I just stuck my aftermarket antenna on the same metal plate with the factory antenna. Reception is outstanding through the hardtop, even in my garage with the metal door above the Jeep.

I used to work for Circuit City, and we installed alot of these. I would either go with the cowl or on the dash by the front window. You can use double sided tape and it works great. I have the micro ant. on mine. so it's small. You can also pain the ant. so it matches.

no real offense meant, but...

...that's why I would never go to Circuit City for getting anything installed. A lot of engineering went into selecting the best factory location for the antenna, plus there's no visible advertisement that you have a satellite radio in your rig. Good luck.

if you want to get techincal... the "best" location for the ant is 6 inches from the front windshield or 6 inches from the rear window. thats 6 inches in any direction. since you do not have a trunk that would mean right in the middle of your hood. Like I said I personally don't mind mine on the cowl. it should work great on top of the roll bar on the speaker pod. You can also install them on the dash. The windshield should not affect the reception. It is a matter of personal choice. And how much work you want to do. I do agree that inside is better b/c there is no advertisement.

I stand by my statement....

..only because if Jeep put an antenna where reception was marginal or unacceptable, then they would have a lot of warranty issues or service calls for poor/no reception. All I know is that with either may factory sat. antenna and the aftermarket one the reception is phenomenol. I get reception sitting in the garage, even with the steel garage door overhead. I might try moving the antenna to a few different locations just to test the opinion out. With the fiberglas and soft tops we don't have a lot of options. I'm sure the outside roof on a conventional SUV or car is perfect too.

I also stand behind the CC statement!!

jrhorton i want to apologize. I believe we got off to the wrong foot. I agree you need to test out some diffrent loactions to see which one fits you best. there are no real "rules" to this. use what ever works for you. And everyone is entitled to their opinions(even if I don't agree). have a great day.

I put mine on the hood, right in the middle of the windshield bumper pads. Looks fine, works great.

jrhorton 01-25-2006 03:24 PM

and let me be the second to apologize....

i mounted my on the hood hinge and works fine

If the satellite system your using is XM, you should be o.k. mounting the antenna on the dash as XM also uses cell towers to transmit as well as satellite. For Sirius though, you NEED a clear shot of the southern sky as they are satellite only. I have Sirius in my 97 Wrangler and I mounted my antenna on top of the sound bar under the cushioned sleeve that surrounds it. Not only do I get good reception it is completely hidden.

ran mine to right under the windshield, mounted vertically. Ineed to take some time and do a more pro job concealing wires. I've just got them tucked behind the dash.

rich1014 05-08-2006 04:35 PM

mine's on the hood, between the windshield bumpers. Looks fine, no problems.
