WOHVA Monthly Update June'11
WOHVA Update June, 2011
Since our last update, WOHVA has diligently assuring that environmentally
responsible OHV recreational opportunities remain available nationwide and are
expanded here the Badger State. Just a few of the things WOHVA has been up to
WOHVA contacted the US Forest Service (USFS) and urged Chief Tidwell to
extend the public comment period expiring on May 16, 2011, for the Draft
Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) and proposed rule for the
Forest Planning Rule. On May 4, 2011, Chief Tidwell responded to our request,
denying an extension of the public comment period.
With the denial of our request, it becomes vital that all WOHVA Individual Members contact their Representative and both
State Senators and ask them to do what they can to stop this bureaucratic nightmare before it becomes policy.
Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest (CNNF) staffers from the Laona/Lakewood
Ranger District and WOHVA met, toured and discussed areas of concern on Forest
Road #55552 (The Pipeline). Discussion centered around trail erosion, trail
closures, current and future grants, fire dangers, wet areas, standing water,
recreationists disregarding closed areas, our Joint Memo of Understanding (MOU),
our pending 4WD Sticker Program Legislation and future updates to the Motorized
Vehicle Use Map (MVUM).
The MOU should be signed later this summer. Additionally, later this summer the CNNF & WOHVA will begin working on the
Phase Two Grant for The Pipeline. It’s anticipated that this Grant will be much larger in scope addressing the long term
sustainability of area and the ability of it remaining a viable motorized recreational opportunity for future generations.
WOHVA was contacted by CNNF staff and offered our assistance in extending
the then Voluntary 10 Day Recreational Trail Opening Delay. We encouraged all
motorized trail users to delay starting their trail riding season until such time that
the trails had dried and firmed. As always, WOHVA urges trail riders to always
follow the Tread Lightly! Principles and avoid wet trails, standing water, mud and

WOHVA participated in the 1

WOHVA met with the Forest County Chamber of Commerce to discuss moving
ahead with a Motorized Recreation Area (MRA) without assistance from the
Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
Motorized recreationists are well aware of the snails pace at which the DNR has moved on this project since receiving a
mandate from the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) to explore the potential of this project in June of 2006.
The Crandon International Off-Road Raceway and WOHVA met to discuss possible
trail riding opportunities on a small parcel of land adjacent to the track complex.
Discussion centered on responsible trail development, liability issues, wetland concerns and day-to-day business operation
should the project move ahead.

recreational opportunities on trails and properties in Forest County.
WOHVA had the opportunity to meet with and discuss issues of vital importance to
motorized recreation enthusiasts with the following elected officials; Wisconsin

Forestry Department to discuss and inspect trails and potential trail sites on the
Tribal holdings near Mole Lake, Wisconsin.
As a result of a meeting earlier in the month between the Crandon International
Off-Road Raceway (The Track) and WOHVA, the WOHVA Board of Directors
formally expressed their interest in assisting The Track in developing and
operating trail riding opportunities on their property on select weekends
throughout the 2012 trail riding season.
WOHVA’s past experience with The Track (WOHVA
Volunteers have worked events at The Track for the past 8 years and also partnered with The Track to co-host the 40th
Anniversary Brush Run 101 Trail Ride) prompted The Track to contact WOHVA on this project.
