Gas tank

Is it normal to hear a sucking in air sound everytime you open the gas cap?

It's normal to hear air rushing past, it will be blowing, not sucking. This is the gas vapour in the tank escaping which becomes pressurised in the gas tank. This is normal.

Actually, just thinking about this, it will be sucking as the gas tank is effectively trying to implode as the fuel pump is sucking the fuel out of the tank therefore creating a vacuum in the gas tank. One of the two will be correct but it's still normal, every car I've owned has done this

Umm if the pump was sucking with no type of vent or positive pressure allowed, it would suck the tank till it collapsed.

Your fuel tank is pressurized as part of the emissions system. That's why if you don't have the cap tight it can set a code in the ECM for an fuel evap system problem.

Either that, or with today's gas prices and jeep's gas mileage, the sucking sound is dollars being sucked out of your wallet.
