Does the front drive shaft spin in 2HI?

I was working on my trans this past weekend and didn't bother to put the floor cover back in before driving around. I noticed in 2HI that the front drive shaft turns. Is this correct or did I goof up the linkage on the transfer case maybe?

It will continue to spin in 2-hi, unless you get a manual lock out hub conversion kit for it, but those run at least $800, so I don't know if it would be worth it for you.

Nope it is fine that this happens. Just like moneypit said above. It isn't the Tcase that is powering your front shaft. It is the fact that the axles are always turning up front on our TJ's unless you have a manual hub kit on there. But you only have power going to the front if you are in 4wd.

OK, dumb question, but how would a hub conversion kit stop my drive shaft from spinning. I don't have problems with the front axle engaging, I'm just wondering about the drive shaft itself spinning.

I guess I'm asking what's the point of 2HI and 4HI in the transfer case if the front drive shaft spins all the time?

Your driveshaft only spins because the axle shafts are always spining with the tires which in turn causes the pinion to turn and then subsequently your drive shaft to spin. It is kind of like the exact reverse that happens when you are in 4wd. However there is no power going to the front wheels. It is only motion caused by the tires spining.

If you had manual lock out hubs then when they were un-locked it wouldn't cause the axle shafts to spin with the tires and then subsequently you would get no rotation from the other parts either. Then when you locked them in it would be just as it is now.

And to your last question you aren't supplying power to those wheels via your front driveshaft unless your Tcase is in 4hi or 4lo. When you are in 2hi the driveshaft is just spining freely with the front axle shafts.

Doh!!! I should have realized the front axle was spinning. Thanks...

Over thinking things since putting in the newer engine. Lots better than that old 4cy though.
