tailgate hinge sticking

My '97 has had most of the paint flake off the tailgate hinges. They appear to be aluminum, and I have to fight to open and close the rear gate. PB Blaster and WD40 have done nothing to help. Do I need to replace these hinges?

Do you have an oversize spare if so the extra weight might have damaged them.. Ive seen em made of stainless ..might be the answer

mine does the same, i've sprayed it with wd40 and it works for a little while, but always gets hard to close and open again.

my 98 did the same thing. What happened was the oxidation fell into the inside of the hindge.I just replaced it with stainless like khinderson said simple fix and looks lots better than a ball of rust under paint.

Try Grease Zerks

I went the penetrant, oil, WD-40, etc route and nothing seemed to help. I finally drilled a hole and installed grease fittings in each hinge. I was carrying a 33" spare prior, but haven't had it on the tailgate for a couple of months so I don't know if the fittings would significantly weaken the hinges.

My spare rides on a swing out bumper so hinge strength isn't a concern. This seems like an ingeniously simple solution. Where exactly did you install the zerks? Just keep the drill bit horizontal and tap in until you hit the hinge pin?

Okay, so maybe four years later is a bit much, but at least it's something:redface:

Simple zerk installation: drill horizontal hole of appropriate size approximately 5/8" (16mm) from outboard edge of tailgate hinge and tap in zerk fitting.

Service with your choice of grease; I used marine grease.

My spare is a OEM Gambler w/BFG MT KM2 ~84lbs. I don't always carry a spare, but the times I have were pretty punishing for months at a stretch.
