exhaust mufflers?

What are you guys running? im looking for something with a bit more noise to it but dont want to have to yell over it once im up to speed. Im keeping my cat and just need a muffler. Ive been looking at the flowmaster 40 or 44 any thoughts?

scgeek12 06-15-2011 11:40 PM

heres what the flowmaster 40 sounds like, i really like mine, dont mind the really bad exhaust leak lol

I Love my banks monster system, great sound for idle and around town, not intrusive at highway speeds (soft top, idk about it being audible for hardtop), and a nice roar when you finally get a chance to pass the idiot on the cellphone.

My Cherry Bomb believe it or not has a really good sound. People that don't know jeeps ask me if i have a V-8 all the time.

same here. i have gotten dozens of compliments on the sound. i have people pulling next to me at red lights to ask what i have under the hood hahaha

Your 40series flowmaster will sound better the the 44. If your not running a header plus leaving the cat, the 40 series will have a pretty mellow sound, but you will be able to tell its there when your on the peddle.

Stock 160,000 :)

jp2611 06-16-2011 08:58 AM

have the flowmaster and get lots of compliments. I do have "high flow" cat though-not sure it makes that big of a difference-cat went bad (plugged) and changed muffler at same time. So perceptions all off as for improved performance- anything would be better than not being able to "breathe."

rockhard98 06-16-2011 09:42 AM

Flowmasters are a great high quality muffler and like many I love the sound. Got a set on my Ford with a built 429, can hear it coming from a mile away. Would love to put one on my jeep, especially sents I got a chunk of cat that broke loose and bounces around in My muffler.

I'm gonna end up running a rod threw my cat to brake up all the crap inside so it will flow like it ain't there, but still "look" like its in good working order. No emissions testing here so no worrys. Never ran a "high flow design" I hear they work pretty good, but then anything is better then stock.

The xtra flow will add a little more sound to your exhaust due to less restriction. Should add some power as well, can also improve your gas mileage. I beleave setting up your rig to breath should always be one of the first things ya should do.

I am slacking on that part myself lol, but its deffently on the list.

are the cherry bombs super loud? what can I expect to pay to get a muffler welded on?

scgeek12 06-19-2011 08:30 PM

I have a flowmaster super 44 and Love the Sound.

TORO 06-20-2011 01:03 AM

My Jeep has a cherry bomb on it. PO had it installed. It sounds pretty good. Definitely not ricey. Plenty deep but almost sounds like a school bus to me sometimes. Not too loud with the soft top on but for some reason when I have it off it is pretty loud. Idle is the worst. Idle is super loud and when the earth is closer to the bottom (on trails) it is even louder almost ridiculously loud. I don't have a catalytic converter and the exhaust dumps out directly under the front passenger's seat. I'm going to extend the pipe out the back and see if that cuts down on some of the idle's drone. If that doesn't help I'll be looking for other mufflers. Not crazy about super loud.

When you upgrade your exhaust, don't you have to to something to your air intake too?

you dont have to, the stock TJ intake is already sufficient enough, your not going to get much better in fact w/o upgrading to a bigger throttle body and so on

So you can upgrade the exhaust without changng the intake? Didn't know that.

Do you have to replace the headers?

I really like the idea of having that deep throaty sound on my TJ.

no need to replace the headers just grab a flowmaster or whatever you decide to go with and bring it in to shop and have them cut out your stock muffler and put the new one in, it will sound a lot better :thumb:

OR if you want to save some money just have them cut out the stock muffler and put a pipe in, jeeps sound pretty bad ass with just pipes (dont remove the cat tho)

i drove mine 30 miles on the highway yesterday open header, and im using the stock intake setup and it ran just fine (except i didnt have any O2 sensors lol)

Cons_Table 06-20-2011 10:46 AM

I have the banks monster cat back and love the sound as well. Not bad at highway speeds, but when you put your foot in it, it opens up with a nice tone.

Cherry bombs sound ok, but I find them kind droning at times (my buddy has one in his cherokee). I have also heard that eventually the fiberglass will burn out of the cherry bomb, leaving you with a not as pleasing sound.

So you just cut the stock, put this in: Gale Banks Engineering 51314 - Banks Monster® Exhaust for 04-06 Jeep® Wrangler TJ with 4.0L I-6 Gasoline Engine - Quadratec
And that's it?

jeepjones 06-20-2011 12:02 PM

Magnaflow, Banks Headers and a 4" high flow racing cat. Thats what I've got and it sounds gnarly. Nothing on the road that sounds the same around here.

Wallygator 06-20-2011 12:10 PM

I used a Dynomax super turbo on mine and it sounded nice. And they make it in a direct bolt on replacement so no shop needed. Gave it a nice rumble without being to noisy on the highway.

Huge mangaflow fan...

i've got a magnaflow muffler with magnaflow cat

TFBlackout05 06-20-2011 07:20 PM

I have a 05 tj 4.0l i bought an exspensive flowmaster and it just wasnt throaty enough! So i cut it off right behind the flange and cat. i just welded a down pipe on that flange! I am impressed with how it sounds! Just try running around with it disconnected from the cat take it around the block real quick and romp on it a few times! see what you think!
