AX15 to Automatic

Has anyone changed their ax15 to an automatic transmission.
My ax15 needs a lot of work. I would like to change to a automatic.
Would appreciate any information and suggestions on which direction to go 350 automatic or would there be another that would work better.

1991 Wrangler 6 cyl.
4 inch lift, 33 in. tires

Back when I still had my 87 Cherokee, I wanted to switch to an auto and did a lot of research on the subject. Checked with specialty shops and 3 different dealers. All had the same opinion. DON'T The amount of work and expense in getting it lined up, tuned up, balanced out isn't worth the effort. Cheaper to just trade it out for a different jeep with auto.

im havin problems with my ax15 as well... gettin it rebuilt this weekend. but i guess they're not good tranny's? i hope (in the next year or 2) to replace the ax15 with something like a nv3550. read about this online, and apparently, its a much better tranny when just switching trannys. but when switchin from manual to auto, i have no idea, but i did come across this when looking for more info on swappin out an ax15. hope this helps some...

Id say swap it out to a nv3550. Thats a great trans and it is gonna save you tons of $$ compared to swapin an auto in there.

A couple of the guys that I wheel with have done manual to auto swaps in YJ's and they said that it is pretty straight forward. The 999 transmissions that they used for them are pretty simple, stout manually controled transmissions. If you do your homework and get all the parts you need from the donor vehicle, it can be a relatively easy and inexpensive swap.

I agree. The 999/32RH is a great medium duty transmission and really all that we need for the 4.0/4.2. Pedal assembly, CPS, lines, cooler etc... and you'll be set. If you can find a donor vehicle in the u pull it yard then you'll be set.
